So, are both works and faith needed?

"Works" vs "faith" are diversions from the real issues ...

It would be better for us to ask ourselves, "what would a true son or daughter do to love & demonstrate their love for their father? Or, what would a faithful wife do to love & demonstrate her love for her husband?" The real issues are trust, repentance, and obedience. Trust in YHWH and Yehoshua Messiah, repent of your sins and attachment to this world, and obey His (not man's) commandments, as any true child or wife would do.

And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. 1Jo 2:3-6

Note that statement: faith without works is dead.

Works are part of faith, not the other way around.

True faith will manifest itself in works.
Without manifestation, the faith is counterfeit (dead).

But works do not save us from the wrath of God on our sin.
Only faith and trust in Jesus Christ does that.

Those words, taken at face value, would mean that election is real and good works are not necessary although a good idea.

Sola Fide (Faith alone) does not mean that Faith is alone.

Infact, I'd go as far as to say we are saved by grace through an active, obedient, penitent, sacramental Faith. The very nature of Faith is a faith that works. If your faith doesnt work, it isnt faith.
