  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Shouldn't 1 Timothy 6:10 perhaps have read; "For the love of self is the root of all evil" instead of the love of money, for after all, it is the love of self that spawns greed and causes one to love money so much that they can tend to greedily and over-zealously pursue it, sometimes to the hurt of others and trample over others in the process, all to afford their own so-called "happiness". Even their love of money is for the sake of themselves, not the money itself. Selfishness spawns all kinds of evil.

Selfishness spawns all kinds of evil.

So does the love of money (as I believe you've already pointed out). The "love of money" is clearly not "THE root of ALL evil" as per the AV. It is certainly "A root of ALL KINDS of evil" however.

The love of money might be better illustrated when Christ said to bring him a piece of money. He said whos image is on the money, they said ceazars. Then he said render unto ceazar what is his and unto my Father what is his. So you see that it is not spicifically money but it is that that is of this world. Those things that are made by the hand of humans, fashioned with tools for the purpose of creating another god.

You bring up an interesting point. However, I think the Lord created us with a "love of self", so we don't go committing suicide. The measure of one's self is also a gauge for your love for others. The 2nd greatest commandment in the 10 Commandments is to love your neighbor as yourself. God needs us to take care of ourselves. His ultimate goal is to create sons and daughters in the image of his son.

There's a difference between love of one's self by through obedience and love for God, and the love of one's self at the expense of other people and God's holiness to fulfill the lusts and desires of the flesh.

As usual, the verse is - like a man - not an island. The paragraph beginning in 1st Timothy, chapter six begins halfway through verse two. Paul here is high lighting various problems Timothy will encounter as a pastor. One of them is greed for gain and so follows verse ten.

In other places, (Titus for instance) Paul warns about self-centeredness. It's not like selfishness never gets mentioned. But this particular place the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to mention 'love of money'.

Self-centered thinking causes many problems with are many and is a valid concern. But it isn't the only problem in Christian living.

Phil 3:18-20
18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
19 Whose end is destruction...whose God is their belly....and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)
20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

The wilderness wandering. Hebrews. Psalm 78.

Phil 2:3-8
3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

All for us.

Right, but I think you're being technical because when I say "love for self" I basically mean eccentric/excessive concern for self, esp over God our Creator and even our "neighbors" if you will, ie self-centerdness/selfishness, kinda like you said in the last line, which is the opposite of love and in all actuality is not true love for even oneself, as ironic as that is.

Try not to take my reference of "love of self" too literally.
