• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello All,

I am not a Bible scholar. I'm just a soul who has recently resumed reading God's word. I read these verses recently, and something about it spoke to me, like an epiphany. It is unlike when I have read other passages of the Bible. This passage stays with me. It has led to a renewal/strengthening of my faith.

Here is my interpretation of these verses.

Jesus was crucified so that we may all receive salvation and be brought to God. He was resurrected by the Holy Spirit. He went to prison/hell to bring the message/opportunity of salvation to all of the souls in hell. Thereby demonstrating God's mercy and forgiveness to everyone.

In a prior age, God cleansed the earth and punished the disobedient with a flood, and he spared only 8 souls. This flood was God's baptism of the earth. But now, all of us can be baptised in Jesus and and brought into the Kingdom of God.

I would love to read any contemplations that anyone else may have on these verses.

1Peter 3:18-22

18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: 22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

Sorry, but Christ preached to "...the spirits in prison..."
See 1 Peter 3:19,20 which shows that the prisoners He preached to were those who were disobedient "...in the days of Noah..."

Also, paradise really could not be described as "prison".

Paradise at the time was synonymous with "Abraham's bosom" and Christ went and preached to all who were with "...the rich man..." who had previously not had a chance to put their faith in the Messiah.

Upon Christ's resurrection, the location of paradise changed when He led a multitude of those who were previously "captives" to heaven.

See: Psalm 68:18; John 5:25-29; and Ephesians 4:8.

Yes these are angels who tried to ruin the seed so that God could not keep his promises ..Gen 3:15

before the cross one side was paradise the other side hades where the rich man was

would not call it captives but they were in a garden

There pretty self explainatory....

17~~ For it is better,
if the will of God be so,
- I wish it were but it is NOT -
that you suffer for well doing,
then for evil doing.

{Note: Peter is saying he wishes the persecution these people are to face was undeserved, but he knows it is not undeserved!}

18~~ Also Christ once has died {spiritual death} for sins. The just/'pure righteousness' as a substitute for the unjust. That He might bring us face to face to The God, being put to death in the sphere of His human body, but was made alive {the resurrection}
by the Spirit {God the Holy Spirit}.

19~~ By means of Whom {God the Holy Spirit} also He {Jesus}, having been transported, made the pronouncement to the spirits {fallen angels} in prison.

{Note: The fallen angles (sons of god) of Genesis 6 are imprisoned still today in Hades. Jesus made a pronouncement to them in Tartarus that their efforts were in vain - they did not prevent Him from coming to the cross as a pure human (genetic attack in Genesis 6).}

20~~Who {the fallen angels} before time were disobedient, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark which was being prepared, in which few, that is, eight souls
were delivered through the water {literal deliverance}.

{Note: God waited patiently during the 120 years before the flood when no one listened to the evangelism of Noah. And an ark literally means 'a chest to preserve treasure' - a treasure chest 8 members of the human race to preserve humanity - there were no ships in Noah's time.}

{Now an analogy - spiritual deliverance}
21~~ Which also represents to us
the baptism that now saves
(not the putting away of the filth of the flesh,
but the pledge of a good conscience toward God),
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

{Note: VERY CLEAR HERE. The baptism of the Spirit saves us and it is a GIFT of God at the point of salvation- we don't earn it or deserve it! And, it is a 'dry' baptism of the spirit and NOT A BATH.}

22~~ Who {Christ} has been transported to heaven,
and keeps on being on the right hand of God . . .
where angels {Satan and the fallen angels here},
both authorities {his commissioned officers}
and powers, have been subordinated to Him {Jesus}.

Christ never preached in prison. The Spirit preached in the days of Noah to those who are now in prison, because they were disobedient then.

Thank you all for your responses. They have been a blessing to read.

To summarize, though:

1) Some believe that Jesus preached in prison/Hell to the dead

2) Some believe that Jesus preached to fallen angels in prison/Hell

3) Some believe that Jesus did not preach in prison/Hell, but preached on earth in the days of Noah.

Which one of the above can the following verse be held consistent with?

1 Peter 4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

The gospel came because of Jesus's crucificion, and it is being preached to those who "are dead." Those dead who accepted the message would then live through the Holy Spirit.

Where did christ go? He went to abraham bosum which was also called paradise. luke 16:19 to the end of the chapter is the place that Jesus went. He took all those from the good half to heaven and the resd are still in hades.. only the angles who fooled around in genises are in hell. (lake of fire) the one on the cross with Christ was told that he would be in paradise that day. He was
Many things changed when Christ rose from the gave.
IN the OT. death was the grave and they waited for that ressurection day, and they are still waiting.
