• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

1 or 2 glasses of wine each day - any danger?

From what I know it is healthy to have 2 glasses of red wine each day for men and 1 for women. I also got bad nerves and are using some strong medication for it irregularly, when needed the most, and I've been thinking with a couple of glasses of wine each day maybe I can cut down on the medicine (that have a high risk of giving addiction) and replace it with something that are less risky and that also are healthy, since also wine seem to be a good way to cool down the nerves. Does that sound like a bad idea? Are there any risks of getting addicted to those two glasses of wine each day?

If it were only two glasses I wouldn't worry about being addicted. The problem is that alcoholism is progressive. My one or two glasses soon became the bottle, evening became all day ... well, I think you've read enough of my stuff to know where I'm going.
Given the troubles you've had already, I'd steer clear. If you're intent on trying, proceed with extreme caution; and make sure there's no possibility of a conflict with your existing meds.

Thanks Bob. Ill use extreme caution then. The last years I had a problem with alcohol, and used to get drunk 3 days a week. I managed to break that habit and I don't feel the same need to get drunk anymore. I think it is uncomfortable to be drunk, but a couple of glasses of wine is better, it gives no side-effects and soothes the nerves, so hopefully I can cut off the getting drunk habit totally and replace it with a consumption that is more healthy, and actually have something good to offer. If I notice that the two glasses turn into bottles, then I of course have to consider how healthy it is :)

I had bad nerves, and used tranquilizers from a doctor, and alcohol to calm myself. I had no clue I was already an alcoholic, until I began psychotherapy.

If you have bad nerves, try natural ways of relaxing, like rigorous exercise, prayer and meditation. Try psychotherapy to learn why you are so agitated you need pills or alcohol to relax.

The last thing I would suggest is drinking. If you had a problem with getting drunk before, it will probably rear its ugly head again.

Hmm...she raises a good point...a bit of counseling seems missing from your diet. This could help you to see things in a different angle. Try it out...I recommend it to even those who consider themselves "sane" or "normal" or "healthy." It's good for growth, stabilization, and renewal.

All of the above posters are right on! I started as well for the nerves and to feel calmer. Then it turned into I couldn't be calm unless I drank. If you look into how drinking releases the calming endorphones in the brain there are great ways to calm down and releases these hormones naturally.

I think what concerns me is "progressive" drinking. It catches up to you and alot of times you do not even realize it until you are trapped in it :(

I have heard that a glass of red wine is good for you. Red wine also has anti toxitants also I believe.

If you have bad nerves, try natural ways of relaxing, like rigorous exercise, prayer and meditation.

 I think this is might be a better route in my opinion.

I think praying to the Lord, taking a few deep breathes, and mediating on some relaxing scripture is far more edifying and relaxing than drinking a little wine. Do be careful brother
