Did the original version of this scripture (as opposed to the english translation) refere to a specific number of years? From what I have been able to find out, it did not. It is a translation decision to change "lots of time" to "a thousand years" and appears to happen many times in english translations.

Anybody?

I don't know if it was mistranslated, but I can say that it is pretty clear from the context that both the Psalmist and Peter are saying that God is outside time and that it is foolish to attach our human concept of time to Him.

I agree. It would appear that Peter is simply calling for patience from his audience.

Can't this verse also mean that the days are not promised and it could end at any second?
Yes.

It also means that it can still be a long time in our future.

We should not obsess on the last days, but rather live our lives as we are taught by the Lord and reinforced by the writers of the Epistles. If we do this we will be ready.

There are two issues:

1. The translation of the Hebrew and Greek passages, as found in many translations, of "1,000 years" is accurate.

2. The referent of 1,000 in a specifc text depends on context; that is, is the referent specifically, exactly 1,000 years, or is the referent to a long period of time?

As an aside, whenever this combination of words is used (whether in OT or NT) the referent is always God's patience waiting for repentance - in other words it is looking forward. This combination is never used in reference to creation.
