  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

1 Corinthians 5:11
But as it is, I wrote to you not to associate with anyone who is called a brother who is a sexual sinner, or covetous, or an idolater, or a slanderer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner. Don’t even eat with such a person.

Can someone further explain this verse and it's context.
Thanks.

In the context of the entire New Testament, we are supposed to warn other Christians when they are sinning, and if they do not turn from their sins, we are to treat them as 'outsiders.' So this is another passage talking about that same thing.

Would you be considered a sinner if you didn't follow this , as I find it would be hard not to associate with family, workmates etc .
1Co 5:9 I wrote you in my letter not to associate with immoral people;
1Co 5:10 I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world.
1Co 5:11 But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler--not even to eat with such a one. (NAS)

This is the immediate context. Paul is talking about in this chapter a man in the church who was having an affair with his fathers wife (his step-mother). This man was a professing Christian in the church but still doing things of the world.

Remember the Pharisees were upset when Jesus associated with people that they considered unclean, ie tax collectors, prostitutes, Samaritans but that didn't make Him a sinner... We need to be the leven in the world and in order to do that we need to be out in society taking the Gospel to people who are hurting. We need to make contact with them and that is part of our job as christians. It's not a sin.

What is a sin is to let someone continue in sin like that in the church and to let it go on without addressing it. If the person truly repents and stops sinning then he can be fully recieved back into the church. If he refuses to repent and stop sinning then he needs to be ostracized from the body of believers.

as one gets good teaching about body truth col 3 :1-3 and one does his part of salvation dying in the flesh and being alive to Christ ...

one would grow and improve by the impowerment of God

I take Paul to mean here that if we, as Christians, discover that a fellow Christian has any of these moral failures, then we have a particular duty to castigate them for their own good. [Assuming, of course, that we do not also have an immoral log in our own eye.] It is not ex-communication as such, but more akin to spiritual 'spanking.'

Most of these sins would be attempted to be hidden by the sinner.

I think the intentions of St Paul were to warn us about not having fellowship with two-faced people, but discerning that much leads to judging (sometimes).
