  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

can anyone explain what Paul is talking about when he says if we don't self judge and we take communion wrongly we will bring judgment upon ourselves?

Is he saying that god will kill us if we take communion wrong? I'm confused

There is a portion of text that says someone died taking communion by doing it wrong.

But yeah all he's saying is examine yourself. If you aren't saved/devoted to God/focused on the food rather then the meaning of the communion then don't partake in it.

Judge yourself, examine yourself and ensure you qualify to partake in communion is what he's telling us.

11:29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

verse 29 helps summarize what I stated.

It was a reason why people were sick and had died.
Yes, God judged them, so that they would not perish along with the world.
God's judgement is active today also. The warning is to treat God as holy and treat others so as not to be shaming them, your no better than they, you who judge another, in that case people were shaming-despising those who were less fortunate than themselves.

22 What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you.

30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.
31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.
32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

Read from verse 11:17 to see what the church had been doing. Basically they were treating God, the intent of his command(s), and other people with disrespect. Paul says that those people were sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.

But he also plainly states the reason:

For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. (1 Corinthians 11:29-30, 1984 NIV)
Is he saying that god will kill us if we take communion wrong?
However, I wouldn't put it this way. He is explaining that some people died because the wages of sin is death, which happens whether one has made God angry or not (Romans 5:13-14).

1 Cor 11:
20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper
(GENERAL ASSEMBLY OR SHARING A COMMON MEAL. "IS NOT" THE PARTAKING OF THE LORDS SUPPER)

21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: & 1 is hungry & another is drunk
(SOME PEOPLE WERE COMING TO EAT. OTHERS SHOWED UP TO DRINK & BECAME DRUNK)

22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, & shame them that have not?
(HE'S EXPLAINING TO THEM THE LORDS SUPPER IS FOR REMEMBERING THE LORDS SACFIFICE. NOT ABOUT EATING & DRINKING)

23 I taught you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread

24 When he had given thanks, he brake it, & said, Take, eat: """this is my body, which is broken for you""": this do in remembrance of me
(DO THIS IN "REMEMBRANCE" OF ME & MY BODY THAT IS BROKEN FOR U)

25 He took the cup, when he had supped, said, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me
(DO THIS IN "REMEMBRANCE" OF ME & MY BLOOD THAT IS SPILLED FOR U)

26 As often as ye """eat this bread""", & drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come
(PARTAKE IN "REMEMBRANCE OF THE LORDS SIN ATONING DEATH, BURIAL & RESURRCTION" ITS THE REAL/TRUE REASON FOR THE LORDS SUPPER)

27 Whoever eats this bread, & drinks this cup of the Lord, """unworthily""" will be guilty of the body & blood of the Lord
(THERE ARE "NO" SIN IMPLICATIONS IN THE THIS TEXT. BELIEF IN CHRISTS SIN SACRIFICE MAKES EVERY BELIEVER WORTHY TO PARTAKE)

28 Let a man examine himself, & so let him """eat of that bread""", & drink of that cup
(EXAMINATION: ARE YOU EATING THE BREAD TO ""REMEMBER & HONOR CHRISTS SELFLESS BODILY SACRIFICE?)

29 He that eats & drinks ""unworthily"" eats & drinks damnation to himself ""not discerning"" the Lord's body
("UNWORTHILY": EVERY CHURCH/BODY HAVE UNBELIEVERS THAT PARTAKE. REREAD VS 21, SOME CAME ""NOT TO HONOR & REMEMBER CHRISTS SIN ATONING SACRIFICE. THEY CAME ONLY TO EAT, DRINK & BE MERRY)

"""DISCERNING""" Vine's Dictionary Definition: 1 Cor. 11:29, with reference to partaking of the bread and the cup of the Lord's Supper unworthily, "by not "discerning" or discriminating, understanding what they represent")

30 For this cause many are weak & sickly among you, & many sleep.
(FORGIVNESS FOR SIN COMES THRU FAITH IN CHRISTS SHED BLOOD. HEALTH COMES FROM FAITH & REMEMBERANCE OF CHRISTS BROKEN BODY)

Some were sick, some had died. Why? Because they had sinned in there undiscerning & unworthy partaking? NO!

They were sickly & some had passed on. Because, they missed understanding the health blessing that comes when one righty divides the Word.

Summery: Forgiveness & Spiritual & Physical Health

The Cup of Blessing (1 Cor 11:25): A cup of (I believe) wine, (I believe) a symbolic representation of the sacrificial New Covenant, cut by & in the Lords Blood. For the forgiveness & removal of every Sin every believer ever commits.

The bread that the Lord took & broke (1 Cor 11:24)(I believe) a symbolic representation of The Lords Sinless body, BROKEN, for the spiritual & physical restitution of every believer.

Pay special attention to Matt 8:17; it accentuates why His Body was Broken

Matthew 8:
16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word """and healed all the sick"""

17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities """& bore our diseases"""

Isa 53 4-6, 1 Pet 2:24 & Matt 6:49-59 All accentuate Christ's Body was Broken for our spiritual & physical health.

REMEMBER - REMEMBERANCE
Generally when we go to REMEMBER the death of a fallen soldier, a family member or loved one. It is a time when we feel grief & loss.

REMEMBER: JESUS HAS RISEN! Our REMEMBERANCE in the Lords Supper. Is a time for CELEBRATION! We are envoking the NEW COVENANT.

"""Remembrance""" itself is a covenantal word. In the Lord's Supper we "Remember" that our blessings were purchased through a costly price

Psalms 105:37 They ate the LAMB & the next day: Although many were old ""NOT 1 WAS FEEBLE AMOUNG THEM""

Question: Are you a believer? Are you sickly or feeling ill? Have you been partaking in Communion REGULARLY?

Question 2: If you had were hungry & close starvation, would 1 meal completely restore your health?

The longer its been since you last partook in the Lords Supper or the sicker you are right now. The more often you should enter into Communion with the Lord!

Put the bread into your hand; close your eyes; see the Lord on the Cross; eat the bread (his body) now praise & thank Him for your spiritual & physical healing!

P.S. Rereading John 6:53 Then """Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood""";

"""""ye have NO LIFE in you""""""

Without spiritual life you. You will never be able to reproduce (soul winning)

We are saved by grace through faith. The sacraments themselves do not save us. The Lord's Supper, "nourishes & sustains" those already born again, "His Church/Body". Maranatha

Flag, do you partake of the communion at your church?

Flag, if you do partake of the communion and you do NOT DISCERN /Believe it to be 100% the Body and Blood Soul and Divinity of Christ, before You, THEN you Eat and Drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily and shall be guilty of the body and Blood of the Lord. Flagg, Scripture states:
1 Corinthians 11:29For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, NOT DISCERNING the body of the Lord.

Flag and if you don't partake of the Communion, then it is obviously that you do not discernrn the Body and Blood of the Lord. So it is JUDGEMENT if you partake of the Communion without DICERNING the Body and Blood of the Lord, and it is JUDGEMENT if you do not Partake of the Communion.

Flag, However, the protestant churches communion is not, the Body and Blood Of Christ, because it is actually only a symbol, which can never be Jesus Christ that you partake of. The Bread and Wine at the Consecration at Mass by a Catholic Priest becomes the Body and Blood Soul and Divinity of Christ, which we partake of.

Catholics, Worship the Eucharist/Communion, Catholics discern the Body and Blood of the Lord!

The wine reflects the blood of Jesus that was shed for us for the cleansing of sin. The body of Jesus was broken so that our bodies may be made whole. This means that forgiveness and cleansing of sin is part of the Atonement. And physical healing is also part of the Atonement as well. So that when we partake of the body and blood of the Lord (I say this so I don't exclude Catholic believers), we are receiving forgiveness and healing.

Those who deny that God still heals today, are not discerning the body of Christ correctly. A sick person who discerns the body of Christ correctly can request healing as he or she eats the bread (or host), in the same way as the believer can request forgiveness and cleansing through the blood of Christ.

It is this incorrect discernment of the body of Christ that results in many believers remaining sick and dying through disease.
