And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.
As we know, Solomon became a womanizer and turned from the Lord after building the temple and palace. God did forsake Him later. The heir was to come from David's body or "line" so we know it wasn't Solomon. Hope this helps. Any other views?God bless.

11 Therefore the LORD said to Solomon, "Because you have done this, and have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant. 12 "Nevertheless I will not do it in your days, for the sake of your father David; I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13 "However I will not tear away the whole kingdom; I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of my servant David, and for the sake of Jerusalem which I have chosen." 14 Now the LORD raised up an adversary against Solomon, Hadad the Edomite; he [was] a descendant of the king in Edom. 23 And God raised up [another] adversary against him, Rezon the son of Eliadah, who had fled from his lord, Hadadezer king of Zobah. 24 So he gathered men to him and became captain over a band [of raiders,] when David killed those [of Zobah.] And they went to Damascus and dwelt there, and reigned in Damascus. 25 He was an adversary of Israel all the days of Solomon (besides the trouble that Hadad [caused);] and he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.

So long as you are doing God's service, He will be with you. This was the deception Satan tried when he twisted the Scriptures:

(Psa 91:11-12) For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. {12} They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

So long as you are in God's way, you're OK.

(Mat 4:6) And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

"At any time", you may be doing something God doesn't like, like jumping off a high pinnacle, when God's way includes the law of gravity. He will not be with you. Oh, He'll see you after you hit the ground, but don't count on Him to break your fall!

Hi

I found this verse rather wierd.

[bible]1 Chronicles 28:20[/bible]

David says, "...he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until..."

Does that mean that when Solomon's done, God will leave him?

Actually the basic idea in this verse is simply that God, who enabled Solomon to complete the work, would not abandon him during a very difficult task (see 1 Chron 29:1). 1 Chronicles 28:20 also parallels Joshua 1:9. Both Solomon and Joshua were encouraged in the same way (i.e., "be strong and courageous, do not be frightened or dismayed").

God's active involvement with Solomon for the task of building the temple was distinct from Solomon's later disobedience and punishment, detailed in 1 Kings 11. Elsewhere in Scripture David and God make it clear to Solomon that He and the Davidic kings after him should follow the Mosaic covenant. If they did not, the community and land would suffer the consequences of their sin.
