‘Trying to force it open': ICE operation at Virginia apartments scares residents

Residents of a Fairfax County apartment complex say agents banged on their doors before the sun rose, one of them saying the officers tried to force their way in​

One man who lives there said agents woke him up about 6:15 a.m.

"I woke up to very loud, what I would categorize as aggressive, knocks at my door. I approached the door, but before opening it I asked who it was. I heard in response that it was the police. I asked if they had a warrant. They indicated they did," the man told News4. He did not want to be named.

The man said he opened the door after the officers gave him a Hispanic name he didn't recognize.

"I asked them, 'Hey, if you have a warrant, it’s for a specific apartment. Are you knocking on everyone’s door?' I kind of reiterated some of the concerns," he said. "The individual who seemed to be in charge threatened to lock me up — asked me if I wanted to be locked up; that would be more accurate."

Residents who spoke with News4 said they didn’t believe the agents detained anyone.

No one is legally required to speak with an ICE agent nor show them one's papers.

And they certainly cannot enter a home or business' private area without the appropriate warrant.

If it were just those people, I wouldn't be worrying. But we are talking about American citizens getting pulled into this, and they are going after people who have been living and working here for years without breaking the law.

If your skin is the wrong color, ICE has shown that even if you have ID they will ignore it.

If my skin were darker or I looked more like a possible immigrant, I sure would be carrying a copy of my birth certificate as well as driver I.D. and passport if I had one.

Here in Arizona, we've seen this play before (2011).....Sheriff Joe Arapaio's deputies would arrest Latino's outside grocery stores....based on their appearance (at the time, local law enforcement were empowered to carry out immigration activities). With Trump pressuring ICE to hit deportation quotas, there will be US citizens and residents swept up in the dragnet.
