    Theosis in the Early Church

Theosis/Deification in the Early Church. St Irenaeus of Lyons For we cast blame upon Him, because we have not been made gods from the beginning, but at first merely men, then at length gods; although God has adopted this course out of His pure benevolence, that no one may impute to Him...

    Nature(s) of Christ

I encounted the following written by a person claiming to be Reformed. I was a bit surprised and would like some clarification. Jesus was the God-Man, 100% God, and 100% Man. Not two natures, but one nature, in Human flesh. He was God in human flesh. I mean, if you believe in the dichotomy...

    Isaiah 53:4-6

Spinning off from another thread: There is nothing to reconcile. I do not see PSA in the that passage. Here is my understanding of the passage, with a few more verses for context. Isaiah 52:13 NASB Behold, My servant will prosper, He will be high and lifted up and greatly exalted. Christ...

    I Love Bright Week.

My cholesterol probably jumped 200 points, but I had a meat-lover's pizza for dinner. Mmmmm. What did you miss the most during your fast?

    What do Lutherans consider themselves?

This question was inspired by a post by Hagios17. Since I am not Calvinist, many Reformed posters assume that I am Arminian. I often have a difficult time explaining that there are other options -- the dispute between Arminianism and Calvinism depends on certain soteriological assumptions...

    Most Comforting Passage in Scripture

You may be surprised at what I currently consider this to be: Exodus 20:1-3 Then God spoke all these words, saying, "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me." I was raised to understand this...

    Lutherans and the Filioque

I know that the Lutheran confessions affirm the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed along with the Apostles' and the (pseudo-)Athanasian Creeds. Among the things I don't know is if there is an official Lutheran position on the Filioque. Does it belong in the Creed?

    Wisdom of Ben Sirach

I started reading this book recently. Thought I would share these verses: Sirach 15:14-17 It was he who created man in the beginning, and he left him in the power of his own inclination. If you will, you can keep the commandments, and to act faithfully is a matter of your own choice. He...

The Word [Logos] and Wisdom [Sophia]

There are several modern Protestant groups who identify the OT writings on Hagia Sophia, the Wisdom of God, with the Holy Spirit. Often, this involves exploiting the fact that the Hebrew word for Spirit is feminine. I think I remember reading that Sophia should be understood as being the...

    Eighth Ecumenical Council: Constantinople IV

Rome currently acknowledges a council held in Constantinople in AD 869 as the Eighth Council. Orthodoxy recognizes (although often does not enumerate) the Council (different from the Roman) held in Constantinople in AD 879 as the Eighth Council. Do Anglicans count any council as the Eighth...

    Favorite Misused Verses

Which verses do you see misused/misquoted the most? How are they used? For me, two come to mind: Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. This is a favorite of people who profess 'We don't need the organized Church. We...
