I studied and taught school in Japan for a couple of years and it has long been common for them to wear a mask long before covid 19. Here in my part of Ohio I think (at least among the men) they balk at wearing a mask becuase it's "not cool" or you're not a tough guy type of thing. I struggled...

One thing that might be overlooked is that a mask will keep you from touching your face - which by reason of habit is hard to do. Touching your eyes nose or mouth is a common way to get infected.
