For me I think John is addressing a lifestyle of habitual sin. Not to say that a Christian never sins but to say that he doesn’t willfully commit habitual sin. As we know in other places John clearly states that we cannot be sinless.

Last time I was in jail I got out of my cell 5 times in 10 months for TOC. I also went 40 days without a shower. Will the nuns be going 40 days without a shower? Will they be going 10 months with no time out of cell to exercise?
