Is the book of Revelation canonical?

No, just canonical. This language of "Deuterocanonical" didn't exist until the Reformation. The Latins invented the term instead of the Protestant "Apocrypha" to speak of the specific books the Protestants rejected, but it has no bearing on their canonical status. In 367 St Athanasios included...

Why isn't there an "American" Orthodox Church

It is uncanonical to have jurisdictions of the Church to share territories. Areas outside of traditionally Orthodox countries are a mess because multiple jurisdictions have a presence. The US should be under Moscow, since they are closest and first went there - and Moscow has recognised the OCA...

Did the Church make a mistake?

In 451, during the reign of the Sovereigns Marcian and Pulcheria, the Fourth Ecumenical Council was convoked in Chalcedon against Eutyches and those of like mind with him. After much debate, the Fathers who were the defenders of Orthodoxy, being 630 in number, agreed among themselves and with...

Is Modernism a current issue for the Orthodox Church?

Not true; St Nikodemos the Hagiorite speaks of these things and actually says we should baptise Roman Catholics. He says the reason we didn't in the past was pragmatic, because they would kill us, but now they are softer and without that sort of power we should be stricter and baptise them as is...

Is Modernism a current issue for the Orthodox Church?

Whether called "modernism" or whatever other name, lukewarmness and heresy have always been an inward battle in the Church. You see it in the New Testament, you see it in the ante-Nicean Fathers, you see it in the post-Nicean Fathers, you see it in Medieval times, and you see it today. These...

    Are canonized Saints infallible?

Many people seem to misunderstand the question. He is not asking whether or not saints are infallible, but whether the canonisation of that saint is infallible. Canonisation is a rigorous process that sometimes takes centuries, often canonisation follows after miracles and so on, other times...

Do you stop being a Jew when you convert to Orthodoxy?

What is a Jew? Many tend to view it in the narrow scope of being an ethnicity - which is more accurately a "Hebrew". Virtually all of these interbred, we no longer know who is from what tribe, etc. That is why you get Ethiopian Jews, Mizrahi Jews, Ashkenazi Jews, Sephardic Jews, etc. You have a...

Just a reminder, -57. Please do try to be respectful :) I'm happy to keep dialoguing, but I would like you to back up what you say with scripture instead of saying 'you're wrong' and simply state your opinion and reformed systematic theology.

Where does the bible show it was a demonstration to others to show your association with these things? Who did the Ethiopian Eunuch, who was only with St Philip and the chariot driver, gutsily demonstrate his faith to? If they are saying "St John got it wrong", then you are likewise saying "St...

Already addressed this here... I'm not going to get into the Reformed 'once saved always saved'/'perseverance/preservation of the saints', it's majorly off topic and this thread isn't even in the debate forum, which, according to the rules, means that this whole dialogue has been off topic...

You say John 3:16 is enough and that all we have to do is believe - but the brother of the Lord, St James, says in his epistle "you believe there is one God, good. Even the demons believe, and tremble" and goes on to say simply believing is not enough... but if you isolate John 3:16, then you...

How does Orthodoxy view Protestant, Roman Catholic and Oriental Orthodox Martyrs ?

I didn't say we shouldn't go to non-Orthodox graves of relatives to pray for them and pay our respects - I said that the teaching of the Church is that we can't consider those murdered for Christ outside of the Church as martyrs because they don't truly die for Christ, and as such we can't go to...

New Greek Archbishop for UK announced

I have been praying for months that it would be +Nikitas, he was the best candidate. Under him, the Church here will flourish. Axios!

How does Orthodoxy view Protestant, Roman Catholic and Oriental Orthodox Martyrs ?

"We further declare that we hold fast to the decrees of the four Councils, and in every way follow the holy Fathers, Athanasius, Hilary, Basil, Gregory the Theologian, Gregory of Nyssa, Ambrose, Theophilus, John (Chrysostom) of Constantinople, Cyril, Augustine, Proclus, Leo and their writings on...

How does Orthodoxy view Protestant, Roman Catholic and Oriental Orthodox Martyrs ?

The short answer is no, they are not martyrs and they are not in heaven. We are forbidden from visiting their graves and especially from venerating them - we pray for their salvation. They aren't considered saints with a small 's', let alone a capital. Here is an informative video on the matter.

    Is Moscow the Third Rome?

There have been many Orthodox Empires and royals marry royals from all over. Is the charter you're referring to the autocephaly grant in which they were called Third Rome? Because none of these things, at least in my opinion and the opinion of many outside of Russia, make Moscow Third Rome. I...

    Is Moscow the Third Rome?

Because that's literally the only reason Constantinople became New Rome, the Emperor made it so, and as a result the Church recognised it. What other criteria would there be that would make something like this legit? Empires may be heavily influenced by or even based on other empires, it doesn't...

    Is Moscow the Third Rome?

The Roman Emperor proclaimed Constantinople to be New Rome, and the Ecumenical Council responded accordingly. Neither ever happened with Moscow/Russia.

Hello, -57 - thanks for your response! This was just intended to be a resource for the Orthodox, but since you've posted objections and others will likely face the same objections, I'll try to give a response here. Before I start, I want to note that I didn't add commentary from Fathers of the...
