Catholics, what exactly do you believe about Mary?

How would you go about determining this? How do you know what is in someone's heart? I'm a Catholic and I believe that some Catholics are excessive in their devotion to Mary, but I have yet to meet a Catholic who comes close to treating Mary as a goddess.

Is it okay to date another Christian whose been divorced?

Scripture only allows for divorce in the case of spousal infidelity but, even in those cases, remarriage is not allowed. Dating does not necessarily mean adultery but it assumes you are interested in pursuing a relationship with the person which might lead to marriage. Since that person is not...

    Art Model

Nudity, in and of itself, is not sinful. The apostles were naked when they went fishing. In John's gospel, when Jesus appeared to them on the beach after His resurrection, Peter had to put his clothes back on. God commanded Isaiah to walk around naked for three years. If nudity was inherently...

So I am sure you guys heard of Jack Van Impe. He is claiming a protestant purgatory now

I googled 'van impe protestant purgatory' and it turned up a VHS tape available through Amazon. Van Impe is an interesting televangelist. He was a hardcore fundamentalist, KJV-only, that kind of thing. About 15 years ago he came to the conclusion that he was wrong about the Catholic Church. He...

How much heterodoxy can your Catholicism take?

I believe that one of the strongest evidences that the Catholic Church is the church founded by Jesus Christ is that, despite itself, it's still around. We've had bad popes, worse liturgies, and even worse theologians but it has survived it all and is in good shape.

How much heterodoxy can your Catholicism take?

Either of your options would cause me to leave, not that I believe that the Vatican would adopt either of them. I was raised Catholic but I did leave for a time after becoming convinced that the church taught error. I returned when I discovered that it was me who was wrong.

Did the Virgin Mary remain a virgin?

Wrong. I'm an only child but I'm still my parents' first-born son. In ancient Jewish culture, first-born son had nothing to do with when you were born. Remember Jacob and Esau? Esau was born first but he sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew. Jacob then became the first-born and...

Did the Virgin Mary remain a virgin?

It's in his work "Against Helvidius" which is available online. Since I doubt that my doing the work of finding the exact quote would actually make any difference to you, you can do your own homework if you really want to read it. It's not a long work so you don't have an excuse not to.

Did the Virgin Mary remain a virgin?

Actually, Jerome states specifically in "Against Helvidius" that no one before Helvidius had made the claim that Mary did not remain a virgin. I'm sure that Jerome had access to writings that we no longer have in addition to the ones we do have which would make his claim a lot more likely than...

Did the Virgin Mary remain a virgin?

Do you have any evidence that someone denied her perpetual virginity prior to Helvidius or just your opinion? Lots of people make claims as to what the early Christians believed which they can't back up. Jerome said that Helvidius was the first and no one seems to have contradicted him.

Did the Virgin Mary remain a virgin?

Tortellini, yes, but only after he became a Montanist heretic. I'd like to see your sources for Clement of Alexandria and Cyril of Jerusalem. Please clarify what you mean by "normal human birth" of Jesus. Are you denying the virgin birth?

Did the Virgin Mary remain a virgin?

While you are in 1 Cor 7, take a look at verse 1. Paul, who was unmarried, does not deny that it is better to live celibately, he just says that if it's going to be a problem, get married. (You might want to take a look at Rev 14:4 also.) Although it is not part of the Bible, there is a work...

Did the Virgin Mary remain a virgin?

First, my point about the Puritans was that they viewed sex as dirty, not what they believed about Mary. I can't speak for others but my interest in Mary's perpetual virginity is because it is the historic teaching of Christianity. It took 400 years for anyone to question the belief. To me...

Did the Virgin Mary remain a virgin?

You are absolutely correct. But the fact that there is absolutely nothing wrong with sexual relations between a husband and a wife doesn't prove that Mary and Joseph had other children. The idea that sex, even for procreation, is somehow dirty is a Protestant invention. It came to us from the...

Questions on the Catholic Charismatic Movement v Pentecostal movement

    1) The gifts are exactly the same. 2) Although the modern charismatic movement dates back to 1967 and was influenced by Pentecostals, you can see the spiritual gifts in operation throughout the church's history. 3) Because Jesus founded the Catholic Church whereas the Pentecostal...

Anti-Christ European Who is the harlot (harlot) in Revelation 17?

I'm Catholic but I've never heard any Catholic say that the harlot of Babylon was the Jews. Where did you hear that?

Futurist Only Pope and Patriarch - Sunni and Shia

I haven't heard anything about this and I find the Russian news media even less trustworthy than our own, but the USA under Obama is certainly not doing anything to help the persecuted Christians. I dislike Putin but, if he is helping, that's a good thing.
