"Doctrine - What Christians Should Believe" by Mark Driscoll and Gerry Breshears

My sons (college age) read "Doctrine". Both told me that they felt like it didn't give enough explanation - in essence, it was too simple. I see Driscoll's reasoning in writing it that way though. The three of us are reading Grudem's "Systematic Theology" and we are loving it!

    The Mortification of Sin

Just got my copy in the mail yesterday... it has several other works by John Owen in it as well. I'm making it my winter read.

    Desiring God by John Piper

I read it as an arminian and it rocked my world a bit... :) I understand the "overuse" of "Christian hedonist", but I think his purpose in that is to call you back as often as possible to the definition. Because we are not used to the term, it takes a number of chapters to drill the concept...

    How would you counsel someone...

To offer the gospel to those far from God is the most loving thing I can think of apart from a perfect God-man hanging on a cross in my stead. I think it's more proof that we don't know the love of Christ for ourselves when we don't share. Her comment is kin to the adage... I just live the...

    Happy Reformation Day!

My son and I actually watched the movie "Luther" for reformation day. It was fun! But even cooler... our pastor dressed up like Martin Luther and shared the significance of Luther's life with us with heavy wonderful transformining emphasis on Jesus and the gospel!! Great day for us!

You've gotten lots of scripture to meditate on, brother! And that's the place to start. Just wanted to add that there's something very simple that we often forget to do. You said you are starting to pray more and more. I would encourage you to pray specifically that God will increase your...

    Pass The Trial

What an interesting way to look at that! Hebrews 12:1-2 says "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder...

why do some women feel called to be leaders in the church?

Hey brother, I did receive your PM, but I haven't been on this forum long enough (or posted enough) to be able to PM you back. Would you like me to respond here to your question or would you like me to email you?

why do some women feel called to be leaders in the church?

I'm one of those women who is "called". I think the struggle for many women comes in the fact that gifts are not gender specific. We are given shepherding / teachings gifts and find ourselves saying, "How can this be? I'm a pastor who can't pastor. I'm a teacher who isn't allowed to teach."...
