    Lay Presidency

I always reckon the fundamental problem is that we don't ordain anywhere close to enough people, and we need to separate the job of Pastor from Parish Priest. There should be a whole host of mature Christians ordained as Priests--probably most of the mature adults within the congregation. I...

    Infant baptism

Many of us would tend to go along with the Lutheran/Calvinist position on the subject of the sign of the Covenant, believing that children should be raised in families where from their earliest memories, they are part of a Covenant community. In the same way male babies were circumsized to show...

    question about the Eucharist/Lord's Supper

God's act and us doing something in obedient faith are not mutually exclusive.

New website for the Anglican Communion.

Unlikely. Remember a number of the largest churches in the UK (certainly the ones where the giving is significant) a large proportion of the membership wouldn't believe in the Real Presence. HTB and those in its image, and All Souls, Langham Place and St Helen's, Bishopgate and those in their...

New website for the Anglican Communion.

It's worth pointing out that TEC raised the ire of a large number of the rest of us who self-describe as Episcopalians around the world when the Americans decided to go by 'The Episcopal Church' with no mention of location. I was confirmed in the Episcopal Church of Jerusalem and the Middle...

The historical-critical method or higher criticism-Yea or Nay?

Everyone should read W. Randolf Tate's: "Biblical Interpretation: An Integrated Approach." That is the single best book on Hermeneutics I've ever read.

Which concordance do you guys use?

I haven't used a concordance in years. Why would I, when there's excellent online resources?

    Confession

Michael, as one of the forum's lurkers and also a bona fide academic theologian (while currently not working as such, I do have the various pieces of paper) I'm happy to answer your questions via Private Message regarding the theology of recociliation in the Anglican church. I am afraid...

    The use of Hebrew terms

Why would you use Hebrew terms? Jesus didn't speak Hebrew, he spoke Aramaic and was almost certainly referred to in either Aramaic or Greek, but never Hebrew. You're not a Jew, don't try and pretend to be one. Rejoice in your salvation as a saved gentile, but don't try and ape Jewish practices...

How do you become a member of the Anglican Church?

Uh, yes we do. You can't be on the electoral roll / membership of other churches at the same time as being on the electoral roll of your parish.

Anyone know what the priest meant by this?

Rumour has it that there are some provinces that do allow delegation of confirmation to priests (generally Archdeacons), but I've never come across it. Certainly the CofE is VERY clear that Confirmation is done by the bishop only.

    Print version of daily prayers

It's an INCREDIBLY irritating book, since the lectionary isn't included, so you have to either print out your own copy from somewhere else or find it online.

    theory of atonement

If you want a more pop theology version, try Brian McLaren's 'A New Kind of Christian' series. While I don't agree with everything he says (nor would many Anglicans) he certainly engages with a lot of postmodern philosophy in what, I might suggest is a very Anglican way, yet not too heavy if you...

    theory of atonement

The Anglican church doesn't particularly take a position on the position on theories of atonement. The 1662 Book of Common Prayer, the closest thing to a book that we all agree on (and even there, we have a few disagreements, like over monarchy and a few other things that Elizabeth I, Hooker and...

1 earth will be created at the start of 2014.

Just because British TV is superior to the rest of the world and so it gets shown everywhere else doesn't mean that we are from another planet, it just means we make better TV... :P:P:P:P:P

    STR Members Only

The main problem in STR, I hate to say it, falls at the feet of Anglican-theology theologically illiterate staff and rules that make it virtually impossible to moderate. The breadth of Anglican theology is a hard beast to even get to grips with when you are an Anglican, let alone when you are...

    Help needed

It seems clear to me that you need a meeting with the Archdeacon as soon as possible. That is potentially severe financial malpractice and/or fraud on his behalf. The Church of England may move very slowly on some matters, but financial matters don't tend to be those.

    Help needed

Dear Catherine, I've been praying for this whole messy situation. I am so sorry you feel this way. One piece of advice, and I must first say, I am not a lawyer, however I have extensive experience of charity commission law. I quite strongly feel that while removing yourself as signatory is...

Continuing Anglican Church vs. Roman Catholic Church

I want to rip out the altar rail at one local Anglican church. But simply because they are a MASSIVE health and safety problem in this instance. The entry to the Church isn't huge, and the main fire exit is beyond the altar rails... but there isn't space to get a wheelchair around the altar rail...

Female priests and the Holy Eucharist?

I suspect that God acts in sacramental ways far beyond the understanding of mere Apostolic Succession. Apostolic Succession is a good thing--it's a good, strong Biblical model. We see Paul commanding Timothy to appoint Bishops. But I know God is not bound by the laws of men, and I strongly...
