Humanae Vitae was ‘prophetically right’, says Pope Benedict

I wonder what he meant by "prophetically correct." I believe there are two senses. The first is our modern sense, where prophecy is a prediction of what will happen in the future. The second, older sense of prophecy is calling a wayward people back to the original faith.

Pope: Condoms Can Be Justified in Some Cases

I've been away for many years but the story about the Pope and condoms made me wonder what's up at CF OBOB. Sad to see that so few of the old timers are still here, but glad to see that the forum lives on. May God bless you and grant you many years, one and all!

Brazil Church Excommunicates Mom, Doctors After Raped 9-Year-Old Has Abortion

I've heard that in Italy, they're not going to allow abortions. If you want to remove the baby from your body, you can do so. But you will have given birth and the doctors will do their best to keep the baby alive. If the baby is so young that it cannot live, your baby will die shortly after...

    Tridentine Mass in the Vernacular

One thing I probably didn't make clear is that, according to my understanding, the American 1964 Missal and the American 1965 Missal are the Vatican's 1962 Missal. They are simply local forms of the 1962 Missal. Kinda like how the US bishops are revising some of the language of the current...

    Tridentine Mass in the Vernacular

No, that's not my question. I'm not asking WHY the local '64 and '65 were abrogated. I'm asking WHETHER they were abrogated. People assumed that the 1970 abrogated the '62, and they were wrong. Perhaps it's equally wrong to assume that the 1970 abrogated the '64 or '65? You say that the...

    Tridentine Mass in the Vernacular

I hear what you are saying. That was the understanding prior to the Pope's motu proprio. But the Pope says that the 1962 Missal was never abrogated - that is, it remains in effect today as it was in the past. And in the past, everyone agreed that the 1962 Missal was "developed" (if you will)...

Catholic Priests says Hindus and Muslims are saved!

I think all he's saying is that, in his opinion, such a belief has not been explicitly condemned by the Church as heresy.

    Tridentine Mass in the Vernacular

From what I've read, the last version of the typical Tridentine Missal was 1962. The next typical missal was the 1970 Missal, the Novus Ordo. "The final typical edition of the Tridentine missal was issued by John XXIII in 1962.... Similar changes made to the liturgy in 1965 and 1967 in the...

    Boston Archdiocese in New Scandal

It’s been a few months since we first told you about allegations of wrongdoing at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. A former gravedigger, Tom Keigney, says workers desecrated graves, stealing gold fillings from corpses and even a skull. The most shocking allegation from Keigney concerns the...

    Question re: Pro-Life Book

I have a question about a novel. It's pro-life. If anyone is here tonight and would be willing to listen, please PM me. (I'll probably be hitting the hay soon, though.) Thanks! RT

    Crusades and Baptism by Blood

My understanding is that anyone who dies for the Christian faith receives a "baptism by blood" and goes straight to heaven. How does one determine what is "for the Christian faith," and when does violence become acceptable (or morally required)? Does there need to be a crusade called for by...

I don't think the Orthodox have a set canon the way that Catholics do. But here is the Wiki on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Books_of_the_Bible

Roman Catholic, Orthodox Churches pledge to seek unity

Hi EG. Yes, I think they will ultimately be fruitful. I think it will take a recognition, in accordance with Florence and the Balamand Statement, the reconciliation is already in effect sufficient that Vatican I and II are not Ecumenical Councils. Once that happens, I think things will move...

Roman Catholic, Orthodox Churches pledge to seek unity

There are a number of ideas and statements towards reconciation. One is that the RC and EO don't disagree, but simply use differently words to describe the same truth, or perhaps are viewing the same jewel through a different facet. Another is that differences predated the Schism, so minor...

Roman Catholic, Orthodox Churches pledge to seek unity

As to the immaculate conception, the EO do not believe that Mary was born with original sin. And the difference in view on original sin predates the schism. As to the acceptability of cremation, it appears to be an innovation in both East and West. The teaching on contraception has...

Roman Catholic, Orthodox Churches pledge to seek unity

I think the first step is the recognition that the post-schism councils except for Florence, or the post-Florence councils, were not "Ecumenical" because the Orthodox were not present. The post-schism councils are the primary reason that reconciliation will be difficult.
