  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Call Process

At the end of our service this evening, my pastor announced that he had received a call from a church in another state, 8 hours away, to be their pastor. He said he has a few weeks to make his decision. I really really really don't want him to go, but that's very selfish of me. He has asked for...

    Gideons

I have been job hunting for the past several weeks. I got an email just now from Gideon's international (the people who put Bibles in hotel rooms etc. ) about an accounts payable position I applied for. They asked if I would be comfortable discussing my faith in an interview setting and if so to...

When to bow in front of an altar?

Around this time last year, I went on a trip to London. I was looking through my old pictures just now and was reminded of this: While there, we visited/toured several different cathedrals/chapels/etc. (Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's, and others). These were Anglican churches, of course. The...

    A Strange Pop Quiz Question

I am studying to get my MBA. One of the classes I am currently taking deals with how technology affects business. The first day of class, my professor asked us to raise our hand if we have a god. Everybody raised their hand except for one or two atheists. He then told us how much he loves...

Question about ringing bells during Words of Institution

Hello everyone! A friend of mine got married yesterday in a Catholic church with a full Mass for the ceremony. I have been to several Catholic weddings/funerals/Masses before, but this ceremony had a few things in it that I had never seen before. The one that stands out in my mind was, when...

Visiting London soon and attending a service at St. Paul's

Hello everyone. I am going on a trip to London in March with a group from my college. Part of our itinerary is attending a church service at St. Paul's Cathedral. This is optional, but I am planning on attending because, how many times will I get this chance in my lifetime? Anyway, I am...

    "Ranks" of Priests?

I'm not sure if the title is the correct term, forgive me if it's not :) One of my cousins got married on Saturday in a Catholic church. I've been to this church many times for weddings, funerals, and a few Masses here and there when we visit my grandparents. The priest who officiated the...

Explaining Lutheranism to a Baptist Friend

I feel like I've been asking a lot of questions lately, but here comes another ;) My friend and I were talking today and the conversation ended up with her expressing curiosity about the Lutheran church. She was raised in a Baptist church and attends a huge Baptist church in town, one with a...

Are marriages usually held in the bride's home church?

No, I am not engaged, though I have found a great guy who could very well be "the one." (he's LCMS too, which is a rare find in this part of the country...) Anyway, a little while ago we were having dinner with his parents and his mom said something along the lines of, "If you two were to get...

Is there a specific way to hold out hands when receiving the Host?

I'm having trouble falling asleep and my mind is thinking about random things... I've noticed that at my home church and my "church away from home" (the one I go to while at college - both LCMS churches), each member has a different way of holding out his/her hands when receiving the Host...

Prayers for a good grade on a test.

This sounds a little selfish, but I am about to take a test for one of my classes in two hours. To get a B in the class I have to get at least an 80% on the test. The test is only 20 questions, so I can only miss four. I've never ever gotten a C in a class before (I've only gotten two B's since...

How to deal with my paranoia of being broken up with?

Hello all. I've been dating my boyfriend for nine months now (though we've known each other for almost two years). He is a really great guy, we have so much in common, and we get along really well. This is going to sound silly and teenager-ish, but... There are times that I get so paranoid...

Non-Lutheran friend coming to church with me this weekend

Hello all. I have a quick question. I have a friend who grew up Catholic, then started going to non-denominational-type churches. She now says she "isn't getting anything out of" those non-denom churches and is searching for a new church. She went with my roommate last week to a Presbyterian...

    Hello!

Hi, everyone! I'm new here (obviously)... Found this website on a random Google search one day and decided to sign up. I'm a Missouri Synod Lutheran. I'm a junior in college, majoring in Accounting. I've lived in Tennessee almost all my life, but I was born in St. Louis, MO and lived in southern...
