  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Thanks Rooster; I would never buy a pet when there are so many needing adoption.

We just lost Sweetheart to tumors on her back and it really broke my heart.
We will be adding a cat to our household this week, from the shelter.....

I must admit that I find the idea of de-toothing an animal repulsive, even moreso than declawing.

Funny think to mention: I read your name as "retarded mule" rather than "rented mule" lol
I find it most disturbing that you would think I was actually serious about detoothing a dog. Did you get de-humored? Stay away from sharp objects, mmmkay?

We're a very warm-hearted family who take in strays as and when they show up on our doorstep. :) They only seem to come one at a time, which is fortunate. :)

My cat enjoys sharpening his claws on other people's car tyres... and generally turns up his nose at a scratching post. :p

Alright, I think I've ranted enough. I'm completely unapologetic about it, too; I feel very strongly about the issue. Like Feo said, maybe some people just don't do well with cats. (I know I don't do well with barking dogs, but that doesn't mean I'm going to put a shock collar on them!)

Thank you for your support, its sad how much weight is put on convience in today's society at the cost of something else. The things you mentioned are NOT uncommon rarities; or once in awhile complications..., they happen very very often.

Perhaps (Just Perhaps) I love my cats very much and saved them from being killed! But didn't want to deal with scratching.

Declawing your cat is NOT a sign of love, its abuse. Theres several pet organizations and many many vets will agree with me. If you dont agree, go do some research on the topic. There are different ways to "deal with scratching", none of which involve ripping your poor cats fingers off.

Don't declaw when there's a zillion more humane solutions out there. If you really love your cat, I hope you'll take the time to look. :)

For cats who sharpen claws on tires-- I'm sure you could find some spare tires... make a scratching post out of them? :D

While I commend those who rescue cats who would otherwise be put down, I would hope that every other option to declawing was tried before they decided to mutilate their cats. Trimming, TRAINING and claw covers are just some of the options out there.

And don't get me started on tail docking and ear pinning on dogs. That is mutilation of the worst degree, for nothing more than aesthetics. :(

I like how people just twist words around - no where did I say declawing was a sign of love. Furthermore, I am not in love with them when I got them from the U.S. Army Vet before being KILLED as mentioned before. But of Course you are right. I should of said the heck with it and let the Army Vet Kill them. I do fall in love with them after awhile.

Declawing is not removal of the nail, the vet cuts off the bone at the first joint. Basically, amputation. And, if it's not done correctly, there will be future problems with walking, constant pain, and possibly some type of re-growth that would account for future surgeries. I do admit to having my previous cat (she died over 2 years ago) de-clawed, but that was when she was young and was about 18 years ago. If I ever get another cat, I will choose a more humane way to control the scratching as in a scratching post, spray (bitter apple) you can put on furniture, or even those plastic covers you can put over their claws...they even make them in colors now, isn't that funny? :p And I do know that some vets even refuse now to do de-clawing....Just my humble opinion, I hope I didn't offend anyone!!
