Vow, it is not a popularity contest... It doesn't matter to me who agrees with me or not. Personally, I think you were making fun of the Roman Catholic Priests by saying basically that they are dumb enough to marry a stripper! Now that comment is an insult to every Priest! I give Priests more credit than that! I have Faith that Catholic Priests would have high expectations and values when they choose a women to spend the rest of their life with.... Priests take the sacrament of marriage very serious. I am sure they won't jump into anything! I believe that the Priests would be very cautious, and have high standards for their wife to be. The Priests would want to be a role model for other Catholic Marriages. I am sure some of the "high expectations a Priest would have for his wife to be would include: dating their fiance many years, the woman is a participating Catholic and shares the same beliefs and goals as he has...., is a good role model for the Catholic Community. I am sure that they would not have sex until marriage etc... etc.... Boy, you give such little credit to your Priests by saying that they would marry a Stripper or Drug Addict. I don't understand your logic? These are your Priests who you respect and ask spiritual guidance from? Then you bash them by saying if they are allowed to get married they would ruin their life, their wife's life, and their kids! Good Grief..... :( Hope

To Hope:

If you took my remarks as an insult to Priests, then you really haven't understood a thing I've tried to say.

I have Faith that Catholic Priests would have high expectations and values when they choose a women to spend the rest of their life with....

The Priests have already chosen a "woman" to spend their lives with, Hope....the Bride of Christ, His Church.

Peace be with you,

Let's remember that having anyone agree with your posts is hardly a prerequisite for posting them. This isn't a popularity contest.

Let's also remember that discussion is hardly fruitful or edifying when fueled only by 'feelings'. Our 'feelings' are purely subjective and are useless as far as being 'proof' of anything.

The Catechism says:

2153 In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus explained the second commandment: "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.' But I say to you, Do not swear at all.... Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything more than this comes from the evil one." ...

[T]he tradition of the Church has understood Jesus' words as not excluding oaths....
I just find that disturbing. And considering a man must make an oath in order to become a priest, I find it doubly so.

But as I said, it is a pilgrim church.

Can we talk about 1 Timothy 1.11?

Qualifications of Bishops

"The saying is sure: whoever aspires to the office of bishops desires a noble task. 2 Now a bishop must be above reproach, married only once, temperate, sensible, respectable, hospitable, and apt teacher, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household well, keeping his children submissive and respectful in everyway----5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how can he take care of God's Church?"

Doesn't this passage set the rules and give permission for Priests and Bishops to get married and have children? It almost sounds like a requirememt for Bishops to be able to manage their households inorder to be able to manage the Church of God. :) Hope

Nope, it's still not a requirement. St Elizabeth Ann Seton, who founded an order of nuns here in the United States, was a widow with several children. In fact, I believe her daughters also followed her into Religious Life.

Closer to home, our last parish priest was a former Episcopalian, who had even been married, with no children. He sought out the Catholic Church after separating from his wife, and obtained an annulment from his marriage before entering the seminary.

You will find an increasing number of seminary students who are beginning a "second career" after losing a wife. These men bring a unique wisdom, patience, and charity to the priesthood, and we are fortunate to have them.

Peace be with you,
