Would like some help understanding something

Hello all, and God bless. I am having some difficulty with regard to a few items that I haver noticed in the bible--in the old testament--and I am wondering if there are a few people who may be able to help me out. BTW, those of you who listen to or subscribe to the Benny Hinn way of scripture--or 99% of those featured on TBN, may pass up the opportunity to respond. Thank you.

I came to Jesus Christ--or He came to me, about 6 years ago. In my Christian wal I have studied primarily the new testament. About a week ago, I decided to venture into the old testament to get a better understanding--and because I figured it was about time I started to read that portion of the bible--to understand it, and to utilize its teachings in my own life.

However, as I now enter the book Levitcus I am somewhat perplexed. BTW, this was a time of savagery and lots of blood guts and gore, no? Anyhow, before I get to the passage I am at in Leviticus, lets skip back a chapter to thebook of Exodus.

I ask you to consider the following statement that God Himself made to Moses regarding God's character. In Exdodus 34:6, God says, "the Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin".

Now, fast forward to Leviticus chapter 10 verse 1. Here Aaron's sons put forth a sacrifice offering that was unauthorized by the Lord. What happens next? This>"so fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord".

Does something seem amiss to only me when I read this? I do not mean to question God's authority to do whatever H wants to do whenever He wants top do it. However in my limited understanding of things, this seems to be a case of contradiction doesn't it?

I know that I have to be missing something here, and I'm almosr positive that as I continue to go forward into the old testament I will be confounded by other articles that will leave me scratching my head.

Can anyone offer any help here? Thank you.

Buddy-
I hope I can help a little. In the old testament, there were many rituals and traditions started when God appointed a people to just follow Him(Isrealities). Well, the thing about it is, that this situation is like that of the rules of the Ark of the covenant. No one was supposed to touch the ark because of it's sacredness to God.
God himself is the Ultimate Holy thing. The sons of Aaron were disrespecting the Law of God, words of God, and defiling what is also sacred and holy to Him. The fire that the two sons had brought was of another fire than the one appointed by the Lord.
The two were sons of Aaron who was the first High priest appointed by God. You think they would have followed directions more closely.

It said in Lev. 10:3-" than Moses said unto Aaron,' This is it that the Lord spake, saying, "I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified."' And Aaron held his peace." Aaron then understood why God did it, and although He was angry, knew that he couldn't speak against the Lord, for He is perfect and right eous.

These 2 men were told by the words of the Lord to use the fire God had appointed from inside the Holy Tabernacle from the alter of the burnt sacrifices, and not from just any fire.

My Bible note quote reads, "The sin of Nadab and Abihu was in acting in the things of God w/o seeking the mind of God. It typefies any use of carnal means to kindle the fire of devotion and praise. "
Even though it isn't totally on the mark, it is like having people bring beer over and holding a Bible study.
God is merciful and just. The 2 brothers didn't respect the Lord enough, and kindled wrath and judgement.

In Levit.10:9b-10:" It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations:
And that you may put difference between holy and unholy, and clean and unclean;"

Indifference to God's laws is just a great a sin as walking on the blood He spilt for us. A lot of people don't think God was fair to these two, but what would we think of our God who doesn't stand firm to His own words? We would not have any hope at all.

I hope this helps you, if not, I pray some one else can clarify this point to you. I am open to advise myself if I am off the mark. ;)
