Johns Hopkins researcher released after being detained by ICE at airport

According to a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson, ICE agents arrested Fatima Ameaka, a Cameroonian national, at the airport on Tuesday. The spokesperson said Ameaka overstayed a visa that expired on June 13, 2024.

"In violation of our nation's laws, she overstayed her visa. She will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings*," the DHS spokesperson said.

According to documents obtained by ABC News, Ameaka had a work authorization permit until 2029 and a pending asylum case.

Johns Hopkins said Ameaka, who has a doctoral degree in pharmacy, is an employee at the Bloomberg School of Public Health and is "a respected member of our community."

I think it's these discrepancies that keep happening as to why this kind of thing gets media coverage. ICE seems either really incompetent or malicious. Or perhaps both, which seems like a really dangerous thing.

She was not just detained, but arrested on a Tuesday at the Baltimore airport, transported to ICE facilities in Virginia, Louisiana, then Texas. On Friday she was released (I don't know how she got home again). She was here lawfully. If this happens to scores of people daily, this is a big problem.

It probably got media attention because "Johns Hopkins" is great clickbait. If she had been a plumber it probably wouldn't have been a news story.

Right. Just imagine how many ordinary people with legal status have faced illegal detention and transportation like this. We only hear a small fraction of their stories.

No, they are pointing out the salient point that they arrested and transported this woman for being in the country illegally, when in fact she is here legally. It was easy for the media to hear about it because Johns Hopkins issued a press release.

Note that the story had been updated. At first, DHS was putting her on a fast track to deportation and keeping her locked up

However, this seems to be a case of they made a mistake.

Those who are at war against DHS and ICE will probably continue to insist that they're evil Gestapo agencies no matter what.

People in the country illegally is a problem of epic proportions because of poor immigration controls during the last administration. Therefore mistakes are more likely to happen due to such high volume. Is she one out of every three, or is it more likely that she's one out of a thousand?

Not if they would stop using evil Gestapo methods. They/we paid money to have people incarcerated in a foreign concentration camp, not only without due process but flouting direct judicial orders. How is that different from being evil Gestapo agencies?
