  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

People were claiming that during Trump's first 4 years. The Democrats got cocky as a result and thought Kamala was going to defeat him the second time around. Result: Trump's second term in office.
I'm not sure cocky is the right word. After midterms, Biden should have announced he was not going to run again. I doubt Harris would have won the nomination in that case. The way things worked out, they went with Harris because she'd get Biden's delegates. She still would be a much better President than the criminal we have in office now, but sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before you realize you have a problem. I see gas prices in Indiana are set to jump 60 cents, which might get people's attention.

Yes, indeed Trump beat every woman whom he ran against.
Are you saying he would have lost if the Democrats would have run a man instead of Clinton and Harris? I know he lost to Biden, but he really didn't run against Biden the first time. He ran against COVID and what COVID did to our society. When he had the chance to run against Biden in a relatively normal year, the Democrats cast him aside.

The truth is Pommer its so lose that any rando can do that. We don't have any government organizations pouring over the voter roles every election to make sure every vote was a legal vote. We just don't. That would be a HUGE task and take a huge agency to do that. With as many states as there are which allows anyone, legal or not to get a valid state ID its not tough for them to vote. We've been over this a lot.

How much security is needed? More than we have. A simple ID that says you are a legal voter and a citizen of this country is certainly not too much to ask. We aren't asking for armed guards and security lines. Just an ID. We require IDs for everything. Voting is far more impact full upon all of us than the ability to access government programs.

Really? I have a Florida driver's license. In the last few years, the state started requiring people to prove they are a citizen to renew their license. My license now has a gold star in the upper right corner which means that I passed, I have a REAL ID, as it is called. Maybe I got a pass because I'm an old white guy.

Some people had to show a US passport, a birth certificate, and other documents to renew their driver's license. In the case of a woman who name changed because of marriage or divorce, she has to show a copy of the documents, such as the court order that changed her name.

The state claims that all this is required by a Federal law passed in 2005.

The Federal Law for Real ID does not prove citizenship. So it is useless for voting. Now Florida may have additional requirements on top of that which would make your ID a legal citizenship ID. My state recently passed laws which allows us to provide necessary documentation for our ID which is then stamped "citizen" on it. Proof of citizenship.

You heard that - is it true? Is it relevant?

Which is absurd.

NYS has both Real IDs which don't prove citizenship and Enhanced ID which do and allows a person to fly domestically and to cross the border, Mexico or Canada, by land.

That's New York's fault, and it's not surprising that they'd hand out ID's to people who don't even have proof of citizenship. Conservatives were warning about handing out ID's to illegals because an ID gives them the ability to vote even though they're here illegally. But they did it anyway, and it was no doubt intentional. They know who illegals would vote for.

What? Real IDs do not prove citizenship for federal purposes anywhere.

In NYS we have to provide proof of residency for a standard driver's license, provide proof of residency and proof of citizenship for Real IDs (even though) and provide proof of residency, proof of citizenship, a social security number and a couple more things for an Enhanced ID.
Conservatives were warning about handing out ID's to illegals because an ID gives them the ability to vote even though they're here illegally.
Except that it doesn't. In no state does having an ID given non-citizens, including permanent residents, temporary residents, etc.) the ability to vote whether they are here legally or not, no voting for them.
But they did it anyway, and it was no doubt intentional. They know who illegals would vote for.
Of course they do. It wouldn't be such a well used boogeyman otherwise.

You require ID to buy groceries but complain about ID to vote?
Aren't these NYC groceries supposed to offer some sort of discount to (some?) residents? If so, wouldn't it be needed to show you are a resident of NYC?

And being able to vote offers you the ability to choose who is going to govern you. Wouldn't it be needed to show you are a citizen of of the US before casting your vote?

This is sooooo tiring and sooooo repetitive. Sigh.

When I was 18 and registered to vote, I had to demonstrate that
1. I was who I claimed to be,
2. I was old enough to vote,
3. That I resided in the precinct,

and to sign, under penalty of perjury, that the information I presented was true and that I was a citizen of the US.

To demonstrate these, I showed my driver's license with a non-local address and a bill showing my current address.

Once I was registered, I only needed to show that I was the person registered, so my student ID sufficed for that purpose.

It was good enough 35 years ago, it should be still fine.

Amid protests, NC elections board rejects campus voting sites and Sunday voting in several counties

"NC A&T State University students packed the North Carolina State Board of Elections meeting in Raleigh to support an early voting site on their campus for the upcoming primaries.
When the board adopted a plan without a voting site on the Greensboro campus, students stood with their signs near the front of the room behind the presenters’ desk.
After a student said board members wouldn’t look them in the eye, board Chairman Francis De Luca threatened to call the cops on students if they didn’t leave. One student said the outcome would have been different if the group was white. De Luca said he resented that suggestion.
Jeff Carmon, the state board’s only Black member, walked up to the students and encouraged them to keep working.
The student protest was just one mark in a contentious meeting where the state board’s Republican majority decided that Elon University and Western Carolina University also will not have early voting sites for the primary, even though those colleges have a history of hosting polling places."
Voter suppression given voting patterns of those who tend to not vote for you.
It's a long held GOP tradition.

I heard that the government run grocery stores in NY are going to require ID to shop there.

FACT FOCUS: No, You Won't Need an ID to Shop at City-Owned Grocery Stores in New York City

'"New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's plan to open five city-owned grocery stores is being misrepresented online in posts that claim identification will be required to shop there. The claims are juxtaposed against Democratic resistance to nationwide voter ID requirements.
Republican officials and other major public figures, as well as conservative social media influencers, were among those who made the claim.
Misinformation began spreading in response to a comment made at a press conference last week by Jeanny Pak, the interim president and CEO of New York City's Economic Development Corporation. Asked how the city will stop people from taking advantage of lower prices at the stores, Pak mentioned the possibility of a “library-card-esque" system.
But city officials say there will be no ID requirement for shoppers."
Don't fall for what "Republican officials and other major public figures, as well as conservative social media influencers," claim. Reality is just a speed bump for them.
