Finland to Cut Cable Lines Carrying Up to 70% of Russia’s Foreign Web Traffic
Finland will dismantle power pylons supporting cross-border fiber-optic internet cables, impacting Russian web traffic and communication infrastructure.
Something a little bit different as a topic from the usual things that seem to pop up here.
Long story short, back in 2022, Russian export of electricity was halted through these power lines/pylons, which are also used to service and carry the data cables used by (varying by year) around 60-70% of Russias foreign web traffic.
Because of the cut of electricity exports, these pylons are no longer financially viable and Fingrid (who operates them) has notified Russia that they will be taken down at the start of next year and dismantled.
