Abandonment in the Nursing Home

Hi Everyone, yesterday I visited with a young man in a local nursing home. He appeared to be a little over 30 years old. Let's say his name is John. John appeared to have a crippling disease that left his arms and legs drawn up and he was unable to focus his eyes. There was an archery and a basketball trophy on the shelf in his room. At one time John had been a good basketball player and involved in archery. Now John is in the nursing home and unable to care for himself. But another tragedy is that John has been abandoned by his family. In this facility there are at least 2 young men who get no visits from their parents, siblings, or cousins. I spent some time with John and did some bible reading with him. John is unable to have a conversation. But he can understand perfect English and can say yes or no to questions. After our visit I was so angry with his family and the world.

This situation reminds me of Matthew chapter 25:
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Abandonment is addressed in Matthew 25 and will be one of the issues dealt with on judgement day.
