  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

On The Shortness of Life by Lucius Annaeus Seneca. One of the idea Seneca discusses is that life is not short but that people waste much of it.
Agree with Seneca, we wasted much of our time, a lot of them on distractions.

Commentarii de Bello Gallico ("Commentaries on the Gallic War") by Caius Iulius Caesar (Julius Caesar). One of the best and most detailed accounts of the Roman Army of the Late Republic/Early Principate period in combat operations.

"On Peace of Mind" (De Tranquillitate Animi) - By Seneca.

"Yet nothing delights the mind so much as faithful and pleasant friendship: what a blessing it is when there is one whose breast is ready to receive all your secrets with safety, whose knowledge of your actions you fear less than your own conscience, whose conversation removes your anxieties, whose advice assists your plans, whose cheerfulness dispels your gloom, whose very sight delights you!"

" The Right Conception of Sin' by Richard S Taylor.
The author demonstrates the importance of having a right definition of sin. Failing to do this leads to shakey theology and no deliverance from sin in one's life.

Stoic Lessons: Musonius Rufus' Complete Works. Caius Musonius Rufus was known as 'The Roman Socrates'. He was a contemporary of Seneca. Taught the Stoic philosopher Epictetus (who may have taught Marcus Aurelius. He certainly influenced him).

I didn't finish the second volume about the story of Christianity. I have about 150 pages to go. It's getting too heavy and philosophical. I do plan to go back to it at some point. For now, I'll start on this.

It's one of my favorites. Which story do you like most in the series?

Perelandra by C.S. Lewis. I wanted to read it after reading Paradise Lost since in some ways Perelandra functions as an imaginative science-fiction retelling of John Milton's Paradise Lost. While Milton's epic tells the story of how Eden was lost, Lewis's novel explores a hypothetical scenario in which a new world's Adam and Eve successfully resist temptation, retaining their paradise.

I was at the Christian Book Store & paging thru Augustine's Confessions, which is a memoir in the form of a prayer to God. I found it encouraging b/c it's like it could've been written today. It's all the same problems. Don't let people tell you we're past all that.

Confessions by Augustine is an excellent read. It is easier than his City of God, which is also very good.
