  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

New GOP efforts to make it harder to vote

You've only proven that you believe the claim. Writing a post to state such is that proof of your belief. However, proving your belief to be based on a fact requires far more.
My prior posts provided documentation, which you keep denying. And yet the truth remains the truth.

Reminding me of what?
Your position. Did you forget already?

That's what you posted, so it must be your position. And don't Bother telling me that it's a quote of what somebody else said. If you posted it, then you obviously agree with it and it is your position.

Left wing propaganda site links aren't documents. Nor are screenshots of Reddit posts.

"Then so is the gasoline needed to drive a car to the polling place. They wouldn't need a car to walk to the mailbox. It's amazing how people used to fight to the death for the right to vote, but aren't willing to do the simplest things in our modern age to actually vote without complaining..."

That's what you posted, so it must be your position.
No, it's what you posted. Those are your words.
And don't Bother telling me that it's a quote of what somebody else said. If you posted it, then you obviously agree with it and it is your position.
The quoted passage are your words, not mine.

It's still unclear what you think my position is.

Your copying/pasting was apparently botched there.
I think yours was. Here's what you posted:

The words in the top quoted section "Then so is the gasoline ..." are yours.

@Aldebaran , can you explain how you think these statements are equivalent? They do not appear equivalent. Indeed, it's hard to parse what "not every vote needs to count" is supposed to mean at all.

The first statement is much clearer. The small number of improper votes cast had no effect on the election.

That's easy! He quotes someone as dismissing illegal votes as not being important enough to do anything about because there supposedly wasn't enough of them to change the results. However, when illegals vote it does sway the actual vote tally, and legal votes are cancelled out by the illegal votes. For example, if I along with 399 other people vote for a conservative Candidate, and then there are 400 illegal votes being cast for the Liberal candidate, Then the conservative votes are canceled out. That should not be happening. But to allow it is to say that not every vote needs to count. Allowing 400 illegal votes cancels out 400 legal votes, making them not count.
It's irrelevant whether or not it would have changed the outcome. In smaller communities, that many votes could easily change the outcome.
It's an issue that needs to be dealt with rather than dismissed.

What illegal votes?

If there were illegal votes, you'd have convictions.
However, when illegals vote it does sway the actual vote tally, and legal votes are cancelled out by the illegal votes.
No they aren't.

It's not.

The 2000 election was decided by approximately that many mail-in ballots from overseas service members, even though such ballots are not postmarked with a date and were mailed late.

Conservative columnist George Will stated after the 2000 election that there's no point in arguing about discrepancies within the margin of error.

On what date did the conservative position change on that matter?
In smaller communities, that many votes could easily change the outcome.
It's an issue that needs to be dealt with rather than dismissed.
You've yet to demonstrate there is an issue. How many convictions have been obtained (aside from the Trump administration's)?

I did, but I did not claim that "Left wing propaganda site links are documents, or screenshots of Reddit posts.'
And yet that is what you used as your "documentation". Of course you don't call it that, but that's the truth of it.
Post credible evidence of what you claim and maybe I'll take it seriously.

I’m not sure what anyone has said on this thread, but look at the facts. I found the following on the website of the NAACP. These are excerpts.

<< WHEREAS, there is an unprecedented effort nationally by some state legislatures to restrict the voting rights by tightening rules for voters, including requirements for photo identification, in the name of preventing fraud … >>

<< WHEREAS, proposals to change voting regulations have frequently affected younger voters, particularly college students, as well as low income communities, racial and ethnic minorities, women, and senior citizens … >>

<< WHEREAS, there is an unprecedented effort nationally by some state legislatures to restrict the voting rights by tightening rules for voters, including requirements for photo identification, in the name of preventing fraud; and

WHEREAS, studies have shown that there is no evidence that widespread voting fraud has been uncovered; and

WHEREAS, proposals to change voting regulations have frequently affected younger voters, particularly college students, as well as low income communities, racial and ethnic minorities, women, and senior citizens … >>

<< WHEREAS, in Maine, the Secretary of State investigated 200 students for fraud. After finding no evidence, he sent the students a letter warning them to register their cars in Maine or to cancel their voter registrations; and

WHEREAS, in Texas, voters must show a photo identification, however a state handgun license qualifies, but a state university identification card does not; and

WHEREAS, students in North Carolina have also complained of government efforts, separate from the new voting law, to shut down voting sites at Appalachian State University and Winston-Salem State University … >>

NAACP Opposes Discriminatory Attacks on the Voting Rights of Young Voters by Using Stringent Voter Photo ID Laws and Other Disenfranchising Obstacles

This is not stating that a photo id should not be required. It is speaking of the requirements for photo id being made more difficult, such as the second item you highlighted.

Texas used to allow university id as a form of ID. Many college students are eligible to vote but may not have a drivers license, passport or state id. Prior to the gutting of the voting rights act they were able to use student id's for identification but afterward they eliminated that along with anything that would help students or minorities, who are seen as more liberal voters including removing polling places off campus when many students don't drive.

Critics See Efforts by Counties and Towns to Purge Minority Voters From Rolls

SPARTA, Ga. — When the deputy sheriff’s patrol cruiser pulled up beside him as he walked down Broad Street at sunset last August, Martee Flournoy, a 32-year-old black man, was both confused and rattled. He had reason: In this corner of rural Georgia, African-Americans are arrested at a rate far higher than that of whites.

But the deputy had not come to arrest Mr. Flournoy. Rather, he had come to challenge Mr. Flournoy’s right to vote.

The majority-white Hancock County Board of Elections and Registration was systematically questioning the registrations of more than 180 black Sparta citizens — a fifth of the city’s registered voters — by dispatching deputies with summonses commanding them to appear in person to prove their residence or lose their voting rights. “When I read that letter, I was kind of nervous,” Mr. Flournoy said in an interview. “I didn’t know what to do.”

Alabama moved last year to close 31 driver’s license offices, almost all in rural areas with large African-American populations, as a cost-saving measure. After lawsuit threats and complaints that the closings would severely curtail local voter registration, the state chose to open the offices at least one day a month. Gov. Robert J. Bentley, a Republican, has strongly denied that the closings were racially motivated.

Why are you assuming all illegal votes would be for a liberal candidate (or, presumably, a democrat)? We know, for a fact, that conservative voters have been known to commit voter fraud too. Here are a couple of cases, just as an example.

Still occurs in exceptionally small numbers, and has never been shown to alter the results of any single election, but let's stop pretending it's only liberals or democrats who commit fraud, mmkay?

Attacking the messenger instead of refuting the argument shows the weakness of your position.
Post credible evidence of what you claim and maybe I'll take it seriously.
If my sources are as incredible as you claim, you could easily refute them.

The fact that you haven't is strong evidence that you're unable, or unwilling.

Let me guess: you'll refute them in two weeks.
