  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I love that even after he does all these things that CLEARLY and ONLY benefit people like everyone else on this board, there are still people harumping and harawing about how awful he is. Even when those policies would be DIRECTLY HELPING THEM if they lived there.

Maybe it's like self flagellation; people are just not used to seeing a government official doing things to directly benefit them so they assume is all going to go to [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] or he can't be trusted.

This is a right wing working class fella's chance to ACTUALLY see what it feels like to be a millionaire/billionaire and have a government working for you.

Do you see the competent leader who is helping the working class in the room with you right now?

Under the typical systems, if some social justice vigilante wanted to aggregate all of the names and addresses of people who have a non-primary, non-rental residence valued at over $1M in NYC, it would have taken them quite a long time doing it the old fashioned way.

Now, they can do a 2 second download and open it in Excel and get their potential hit list.... oh sorry, I mean "Not paying fair share accountability" list

Of course, they wouldn't do anything nefarious with that information right???

It's not like Mamdani announced this specific tax by giving away a rich person's personal address in a highly publicized way...oh wait

And the analogy isn't inappropriate or ridiculous, it's similar to what happened.

Mamdani has demonized wealth and wanting to pay less in taxes non-stop and claimed "they're not paying their fair share", and now his office has published a nice concise searchable list where people can go if they want to "teach those greedy rich people a lesson"
It's unnecessary to create a caricaturist of a "the left" person who just wants to perpetuate violence against those greedy rich people.
We don't need to kill them. We just need to tax them. And these taxes LITERALLY have no affect on their day to day living.

Too many of the posts in this thread are implication, innuendo, and hypothetical.

Oh noes! Vigilantes can utilize public records for nefarious purposes!! Poor people can now do what rich people hire other people to do for them - the sky is falling!! You are so right, we must obscure public records from potential...vigilantes with nefarious goals of economic fairness.

Is that his personal address or one of many properties one of the richest men in Manhattan owns that is very specifically not his primary residence?
And the analogy isn't inappropriate or ridiculous, it's similar to what happened.
No, the analogy is both inappropriate and ridiculous.

Mamdani has demonized wealth
No, he has not. Wanting the wealthy to pay more in taxes than the poor and middle class is not demonizing. Hyperbole much?

If by "clearing poor housing to make way for the rich", you mean clearing the sidewalks of tents and cardboard shacks so the general public can use the sidewalks, then I don't see a problem.
No, that is not what I mean. In fact, the tents and cardboard shacks on the streets of New York City are a direct result of all the poor housing getting converted - with tax credits! - into housing for the better tax base without considering where the people who lived in the tenements were going to live. SROs (Single Resident Occupancy hotels that rented out rooms rather than whole apartments) were cleared out, deliberately, to "improve" neighborhoods - but where were the occupants supposed to go? Hoboken got gentrified at the same time.

People living on the streets in NYC were relatively rare until two simultaneous trends - psychiatric hospitals being closed in favor of outpatient treatments and community support and tearing down poor housing - and they were poor - where the former patients were to live and receive the support. This gentrification was deliberate policy to raise the tax base for the city with the increase of people on the street being an apparently unforeseen consequence. The state saved a bundle by closing the hospitals but declined to funnel those savings into the communities that were to take the place of the hospitals.

When you clear the slums without providing alternative housing for the people who live there, this is the result.

So it's not just wealthy people with their information doxxed but everyone on the property tax rolls. How very democratic! It's a darned good thing that wealthy entrepreneurs and corporations can't and don't access information on working class people to target them for predatory marketing and other nefarious schemes!

If that were to happen, no doubt you would be posting rant after rant about how very angry you were about such goings on.

On those lists, no...

It's properties that are non-primary residences that could be subject to this new tax.

Another glaring issue (which I think some of the critics have pointed out) is that it's not as if these are all mansions that are in gated communities or in heightened security buildings.

For a condo/apartment in NYC that's owned, setting a $1M property value threshold isn't just doxxing the "fat cats"

There's nothing spectacular about these properties or anything that scream "rich" when you look at at 800sq ft 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment/condo.

In all likelihood, a lot of these are probably owned by older people who are perhaps retired, and bought them back decades ago when they were more reasonably priced, and then opted to keep them and a good portion of the year in the southern states (like a lot of older people do).

While the "eat the rich" vigilantism is certainly a concern... another concern that I noted earlier is that in cities where there are squatters rights, lists like this could be problematic.

Basically "we've narrowed it down to the list of places were the owners are away more than half the year" presents a problem in a locale where a squatters starts having certain tenants rights after 30 days of occupancy.

Are property tax rolls private in most cities?

I would imagine there's probably some variance across cities.

They haven't been private in any city I've lived in. The only difference is how robust the online portal is.

Most of the garages in my city are detached and face an alley behind the houses. Many of them are also deeded separately from the house, so there are a bunch that are owned by property management groups or other folks who don't live in the neighborhood. I was interested in buying a garage behind my house, so I went on one of Baltimore City's real estate records sites, zoomed into my block, clicked onto each garage plat, found the registered mailing address of each owner, and mailed a letter to the one that was on the other side of town. He responded.

The argument from the people defending the release of the list on the grounds of "well yeah, but that was all technically a matter of public record that someone could find online anyway" isn't a fair argument based on the practical obscurity aspect I mentioned before.

It's not "practically obscure" anymore when the databases are publicly accessible and any rando with LLM access can vibe code an app to pull this data in under an hour.

Another way of putting that is to say that the housing was upgraded and modernized. That's what cities normally like to do with properties. Sure, A city could allow itself to be rundown and dilapidated in order to bring property values down so that everyone can afford to live there. But then businesses won't be attracted to those areas and will go elsewhere, along with the jobs they create. Same for the taxes they would be paying into the city. Then we'd get to hear how it's a a poverty zone and a food desert, and that businesses are racist for avoiding those areas.
Better to upgrade and modernize than allow urban decay. If you don't believe that, go to one of those types of neighborhoods that are poor and have people who are on welfare and can't find a job because there are none. Ask them how life is there.

It's like all taxes. We love them if they don't apply to us.

Not rich? Tax the rich. Not a home owner? Tax property owners. Have an electric car? Tax gasoline. On welfare? Tax income. Don't buy expensive cars/boats? Luxury tax. Don't smoke? Tax cigarettes. Don't drink? Tax alcohol. etc. etc. . Notice Mamdani didn't say to tax people who earn over $200K per year (He earns $259K) or those who get free housing from their jobs. (He lives in Gracie Mansion rent free.)

Lesson: Tax the other guy.

Would the rando with the LLM access also get elected Mayor, spend months promoting a light version of "class warfare" rhetoric, and then advertise the release on Twitter to their 2 million followers?

In a world where a mediocre standup comic / mma announcer becomes the most popular podcast host in the country, anything is possible.

The crux of the issue is two pronged...

It's demonization combined with aggregation/distribution.

You can imagine if the shoe was on the other foot.

Imagine a state or city GOP official who'd built a brand on using hostile rhetoric towards non-citizens, announced a new tax on residential properties owned by foreign nationals, and then hopped on Twitter to announce to a sometimes-rabid, millions-strong, fan base that they'd be releasing a nice sortable searchable list of the impacted names/addresses.

...you think just maybe some people would be throwing up the red flag on the grounds of privacy/safety concerns? Would the fact that it's technically public record negate those concerns?

Because that is tantamount to what's happening here. The DSA (of which, Mamdani is the "star player on the team") has spent the last 2 years bashing "the bourgeoisie", accusing them of not paying their fair share, and then suggesting their tax avoidance is the reason for all the ills of the "working class".

And then hops on Twitter with a taunting message to announce that they're release an "easy to use" list of the potential tax-avoiders.

It very much comes across as a "you know the group that I said was the source of all your problems??? Well here's a list "
