The investigation to identify leakers within the Department of Defense began in late March with a memo from Joe Kasper, then Hegseth’s chief of staff.

"Recent unauthorized disclosures of national security information involving sensitive communications with principals within the Office of the Secretary of Defense demand immediate and thorough investigation," Kasper wrote in the March 21 memo.

"The use of polygraphs in the execution of this investigation will be in accordance with applicable law and policy," Kasper added.

The Associated Press revealed the excursion on Thursday after obtaining government emails through a public records request.

The Navy called it a "VIP Snorkel."

An FBI spokesman flatly refused to answer questions about the snorkeling session, issuing only a vague statement about Patel attending "national security engagements" with military counterparts.

The Navy confirmed the outing happened but said it "was not able to track down who initiated it."

The Navy says participants were briefed on the "historic significance of the Memorial as the final resting place/tomb for hundreds of service members" and told not to touch the wreck. It also insisted the outing was "not an anomaly," noting that past snorkelers have included Navy admirals and secretaries of defense and interior.

The National Park Service, which co-administers the memorial, said it wasn't involved and refused to comment further.

Snorkeling and diving at the Arizona are almost entirely off-limits to the public. The wreck has been a military cemetery since Japan bombed and sank it in 1941. The only people who regularly dive there are marine archaeologists, National Park Service crews surveying the wreck's condition, and the occasional ceremonial diver interring the remains of Arizona survivors who wanted to spend eternity alongside their shipmates.

The group wants records searched for terms including "drunk," "hungover," "inebriated," "passed out," "won't wake," and "unresponsive," according to the complaint — as well as any use of "breaching equipment" by Patel's security detail.

"A request for 'breaching equipment' — normally used by SWAT and hostage-rescue teams to quickly gain entry into buildings — was made last year because Patel had been unreachable behind locked doors," The Atlantic reported.

In a motion filed Tuesday, Pirro's office used the word "emergency" three times in less than two pages to justify the delay.

On Thursday, Judge Randolph D. Moss officially extended Pirro's deadline to July 30.
