I think they are delaying the inevitable. The quicker people see the results of these policies the better for the people. They can elect someone who will get the potholes fixed and the garbage collected on time.

That would be a red herring as it's not a question "what government could technically afford to do", it's about the scope of what government is supposed to do.

The government (if not constrained by purpose-driven rules) could also take the military budget, and repurpose it for a "new Corvette give-away raffle for 15 million lucky citizens" -- but that's not their job, providing national defense is.

So it's not that recipients are getting less, but rather that there are less recipients. And apparently that's because there are tighter requirements. Which were put into place because the system was being exploited. People who could work, were not working in lieu of subsisting off tax payer funds. In other words it's no longer being given to those who don't really need it.

But of course there are those who want a free-for-all society.
