  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Atheists are in the same category as other atheists...
The category is people who don't believe in god(s).
Therefore, atheists are a group because non-atheists say so. Stalin and Mao were also part of this group.
Do they? Wasn't Stalin a seminarian?

Even if they do, what does Mao or Stalin have to do with me or this this attack? I reject both of them.
Do you like that? It's just like you saying that Christians are in the same category as Muslims.
People who believe in god, like you and the muslim attacker in this thread.

I sense vitriol in your sentiments, against the religious, by your insistence to group the religious into categories, while simultaneously avoiding that same categorization for atheists... Is that reactionary? Or intentional?

Why do you think you deserve special treatment?

I sense vitriol in your sentiments, against the religious,
Your sense is wrong. There is no vitriol here.
by your insistence to group the religious into categories,
"Categories"? Putting various kinds of things or people into categories is very natural. I thought you complaint was that I put (despite making the complaint before I had even done it) put everyone with religoin in the same box.

There are many categories that "the religious" can be put in. Some are useful, some are not. There are categories by how many gods you have (monotheism, henotheism, polytheism, trinitarianism, etc,). There are categories by how one religions god is related to other gods (for example various Canaanite religions, religion derivative of Egyptian religion, Hinduism, Abrahamic religion, etc.). They can be categorized by how rigid they apply established teachings/scripture (fundamentalist, mainstream, casual, etc.). They can be categorized by how much effort you put into religion and how much you think about it. There are so many ways to categorize having a religion/god belief.

Perhaps the least useful category is "have a god/don't have a god" i.e., theist/atheist. It tells you virtually nothing about anyone.
while simultaneously avoiding that same categorization for atheists... Is that reactionary? Or intentional?
What categories of atheists are even definable? We don't gather into things like religions as a general rule.
Why do you think you deserve special treatment?
It is rather that I don't think Christians or the religious generally deserve special treatment. I know that religions tend to teach their members that they are special because of their god. It can be hard for the religious to deal with those of us who don't see their religious status as special.

You must not be paying attention, Hans. There's been dozens of times I make a complaint about Islam, only for some left-wing atheist to claim that Christianity is exactly the same.

...Two can play at these games!

If atheists can dictate how similar Islam and Christianity are, even after being shown the differences ad nauseum, then it only makes sense that Christians can say all atheists are the same, or that, they're just like Stalin and Mao, regardless of whatever any atheist has to say about it.
Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all Abrahamic religions and as such do share many ideas, traditions and such while at the same time have distinctions from one another and within each larger tradition. Of the three, Islam is the most monotheistic as Judaism acknowledges other gods (e.g. El, Baal, Asherah) with Yahweh being superior and exclusive to the Israelites. Christianity (mostly) has the 3-in-1 thing going on which is monotheistic while also equally not (it's a mystery!). Islam is exclusively monotheistic.

Atheism has a single shared idea - the nonbelief in any deity. As a category, anyone who doesn't believe in any god or gods is an atheist but there is no set dogma or canon. Are there atheist sects? I don't know and I don't think it matters to this discussion.

Mao and Stalin were atheists (afaik) and so like all atheists did not believe in a god. However, that only goes in one direction - all atheists are not Maoist or Stalinist (some may be) just as all Christians are not Southern Baptists (some may be). Atheists, Christians, Jews and Muslims are all non-Hindus. The Genghis Khan was a non-Hindu so, to your way of categorizing people, Atheists, Christians, Jews and Muslims are in the Ghengis Khan category.

As always, the devil is in the details.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

19% nothing in particular and 6% agnostics and 5% atheists making the de facto godless total some29-30% of the population but unlike evangelical Protestants who had similar population numbers this lot has about 3 times the abortions.
I haven't checked yet, but I'll assume that you've changed your post that prompted this small diversion when you specifically said it was atheists who were the problem regarding abortions.

Ah, no. You haven't. So maybe you can put those goalposts back where you found them. Thanks in advance.

It's common sense.

'Are you religious?'

If the answer is 'yes', then one could ask:

What deity do you believe in?
What religion do you follow?
What denomination do you ascribe to?

But if the answer were to be 'No', then one could ask:

What deity do you not believe in?
What religion do you not follow?
What denomination do you not ascribe to?

The first set of questions are eminently sensible follow ups. The second set is patently idiotic. Ipso facto, trying to categorise atheists is idiotic.

Please tell me that you understand that.

I'm a little surprised by this. Everything I hear is about how more conservative/repressive Muslim immigrants relative to the "enlighted Western" populations on LGBTQ and women's equality. Are they more "assimilated" by naturalization or is there a self-selection effect?

First generation Muslims are generally fleeing from much worse or looking for a better life which they get here. Most only get low level jobs but even those give a relatively comfortable lifestyle. They are generally more conservative but silent about it.

Second generation Muslims have the disadvantage of non German speaking parents and do not do as well in school and get lower paid jobs also. They split in two directions, radicalisation or compromise/ assimilation. The system generally keeps them poor until they adapt to German ways of doing things. The largest number of terrorists come from radicalised kids.

Abdul Ballout was born German , 2005 but had a history of IS sympathies, he was already on the radar. These guys end up in prison or grow up eventually. The system keeps them marginalised but does not have answers to their deepest questions or struggles, being merely secular.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black - the way you played with those stats needed addressing.

The atheist discussion is not main focus of this thread but nor is it entirely irrelevant to the general theme here, as it informs the reason for radical Muslim anger against Western society. If a Muslim perceives a pride parade, the higher numbers of abortions or a concert playing Satanic music as a symptom of godlessness then this is a sentiment shared by most global-historical/mainstream Christians The focus on this thread is on the violence of the Muslim response but this was informed by the anger that many Christians can recognize and understand.

I don't know who that is.

He's the Islamist who rammed his van into a crowd at a German Pride festival killing one and injuring dozens of others.

Wow, this thread went off the rails. Can we all agree that what this Islamist did was abhorrent? This is what the religion of Islam does to people. All across the globe and in the vast majority of Islamic countries. And its not just against the LGBT community. And its not just about speaking out against the depravity of man, its also about being violent and killing and complete control over others by force and violence. Its about lying and stealing from the infidel as we have seen from all the fraud, and about the rape and control over women. As they gain more and more of a presence in the west they move more and more to the radical violent and controlling systems of their religion.

No. But it was in your post regarding abortions. You didn't say that people who don't associate with any recognised religious group and people who think the existence of a deity is still an open question and atheists have more abortions than anyone else. You said it was just atheists and that they comprise over 30% of the population.

You were wrong and I felt it necessary to correct you.

A Muslim went on a stabbing spree in Paris yesterday too. The joys of cultural enrichment.
