  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So now you're limiting it to some nebulous "atheist left".

Where do you find these leftists who also identify as "atheists" as a group?

You guys can't tell me these two wouldn't totally fit in with today's atheist left... These pictures are of Stalin and Mao, in their 100% original format, with only color added.. Original photos.
I wonder why someone felt the need to do some AI work on that photo. The original:

Which is pretty close. But why the need to make him look more metrosexual?

I have never seen a thread go this off topic in my almost 20 years on this forum.

There is a certain australian named steve who is a champion thread derailer. Sometimes several places in the same 3-page reply.

That said, this thread went off the rails in post #3 where my kind was referred to as more odious than Muslims.

I think he looks like George Michael, either way.

...Definitely a left-wing atheist pop hit!

It doesn't have to be by any atheists permission that all left-wing atheists be lumped together as a group based on their likeness... Just like when you lump Christians and Muslims together, against their will, because of some likeness you percieve.

See how that works?

Likeness? Even those two guys you posted pictures of don't look very alike.

What? I don't remember comparing the two of them until after you suggested it.

[ETA: I checked and I absolutely didn't say anything about islam and christianity until after *YOU* accused me of making equivalence between them. The post you responded to referenced an equivlence being made between communism and atheism, but nothing about islam.]
See how that works?
How what works? Could you try making some sense?

You must not be paying attention, Hans. There's been dozens of times I make a complaint about Islam, only for some left-wing atheist to claim that Christianity is exactly the same.

...Two can play at these games! If atheists can dictate how similar Islam and Christianity are, even after being shown the differences ad nauseum, then it only makes sense that Christians can say all atheists are the same, or that, they're just like Stalin and Mao, regardless of whatever any atheist has to say about it.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

What you're describing here is the result of some "strange bedfellows" coalitions and political horseshoes.

In the US, here's the scorecard.

- The conservative fundamentalist Christians and LGBTQ community have beefs
- The conservative fundamentalist Christians and Muslim community have beefs
- The progressive left has an affinity for, and inclination toward, defending any group that their primary political opponents (the conservative fundamentalists) have beefs with.

...so they get lumped into the same political coalition. But in reality, if the conservative Christians and fundamentalist Muslims were aligned politically, progressive support for the Muslim community would fall off a cliff.
The atheist side conversation took us a little off track -partly my fault.

Thanks for your post but first some distinctions between Europe and the USA need to be drawn.

In the USA conservative Christians have some political power, that is not really the case in the biggest European countries and especially in Germany. When a conservative Evangelical missionary ship came to Hamburg in Germany recently it was denounced by the Evangelische Kirche for not being socially progressive and ticking off a whole bunch of social gospel type commitments made by that church. Catholics have a more resilient base here mainly because they have not compromised as thoroughly as the Lutherans and in fact they now out number Lutherans for the first time since near the reformation. God is missing in the halls of power and those who quote his name are more concerned about sounding "relevant" and progressive than sharing anything approaching salt and light.

Most Muslims here (Turks) are really not that religious and are quite well adjusted to German society. A know a whole bunch who drink beer and eat sausages for example.

The progressive left is really the mainstream in German politics and even so called right wing politicians subscribe to a big state, big welfare, LGBTQ rights etc.

The progressive left hate the Trump Administration and right wing fundamentalist American Christians even though neither have that much influence on internal German politics. The biggest rebuke that can be made of the progressive left could come from these groups but the whole system seems designed to deprive them of a voice here. The left like Muslim immigration as these guys once naturalized tend to vote on the left of the political spectrum and they undermine any residual conservative Christian base. But they also like gender equality and support the LGBTQ/Trans agenda and so at the same time they do not like Muslims. The way they handle Muslims is to bless moderates and condemn extremists - so basically the same as with Christians. If you are socially progressive Christian or Muslim you have no problems here at all

The typical German will simply view the Berlin attack as an atrocity by some terrorist extremist and they lack the intellectual tools or indeed inclination to examine root causes here or if they do they will get that analysis wrong and they will view with suspicion anyone who suggests there was a degree of credibility to the murderers anger.

Do you know which group of people have the most abortions?
In Germany and the UK the system is designed to hide such statistics. In the USA Religiously Unaffiliated: Make up roughly 23–28% of the general US population but account for 38% of all abortions, meaning they are statistically overrepresented

The lowest proportional value is with conservative evangelicals - lower than catholics

The site you linked to says atheists acount for 5% of religiously unafilliated:

Atheist 5%

As you said:

'Atheists are still living in the shadow of Stalin and Mao in my view not to mention a broad endorsement of abortion- millions not hundreds.'

Maybe you're looking at the wrong group as regards the most abortions.

From here: People of All Religions Use Birth Control and Have Abortions

  • 17% of abortion patients identified as mainline Protestant;
  • 13% as evangelical Protestant;
  • 24% as Catholic;
  • 38% reported no religious affiliation
So that's 54% religious and 5% atheist (out of that 38%). Yep, definitely looking at the wrong group. Out by a factor of over 10.

And isn't contraception a no go? From the same site it tells us the percentage of women who have used contraception at some point:

  • 99.0% of Catholics;
  • 99.4% of mainline Protestants;
  • 99.3% of evangelical Protestants
Let's face it. That's effectively everyone.

What puzzles me is the radical Muslim/radical left coalition in the United States. At some level the gays must realize the radical Islamists are just using them and wish to see them dead.
Radical Islamists are classified by political scientists as far-right religious extremists.

19% nothing in particular and 6% agnostics and 5% atheists making the de facto godless total some29-30% of the population but unlike evangelical Protestants who had similar population numbers this lot has about 3 times the abortions.

In this thread? We are talking about this thread. I can't keep track of every time a "left-wing atheist" made an equivalence between islam and some other religion. If they did so in some other thread, then make your comment there. If you saw me do it in some other thread, then reply to me there. I did no such thing in *THIS* thread until you pushed me to do so.
...Two can play at these games!
This is a game to you?
If atheists can dictate how similar Islam and Christianity are, even after being shown the differences ad nauseum,
They are in the same category: Religions and subcategory: "mono"theistic religions, and the same family: Abrahamic religion.

Christianity (a very broad category) is closer to Islam than to Buhdism or Hinduism or Shintoism or Scientology (all of which are religions). It is roughly similarly closer to Judaism and Islam (the distinction between the distances is hard to quantifiy).

Just as Christianity is based on Judaism, Islam is based on both.

Islam and Christianity share an important character that is not shared with Judaism -- Jesus. In Islam, Jesus is the greatest of all prophets of God (Allah in Arabic) prior to the last and greatest prophet, Mohammad.

To me, the non-believer, all religions are equally wrong. There is no distinction in their wrongness to me, only difference in what specific wrong things they claim. (One of the consequences of my participation here is to stop giving preference to Christianity among the religions I don't follow, or Catholicism within the sects of Christianity I don't believe. Thanks guys.)
then it only makes sense that Christians can say all atheists are the same, or that, they're just like Stalin and Mao, regardless of whatever any atheist has to say about it.
You keep making category errors. Atheists are non-believers. Maoism/Stalinism are *political* movements. Lumping Democrats with Stalinists (while wrong) is much more justified than the "atheist=Stalinist" slur you keep propagating.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
I am not a bird.

You fail to see that atheists are a minority in the world, with 84% of the worlds current population having faith in some religion.... With that said, very few people are politicized atheists.. Like Mao, Stalin, or those of similar ilk.

Therefore, politicized atheists are very similar to Stalin and Mao in the grand scheme of things.
Christian tribal warfare. What are we playing? Who's bigger? The history I remember is that men kill each other, whether they are religious or not. Is killing less good?

Lutheranism is also on the decline in my country as well.
Most Muslims here (Turks) are really not that religious and are quite well adjusted to German society. A know a whole bunch who drink beer and eat sausages for example.
That's what I kind of suspected from what I've seen about Muslims in some other European countries with generational residency. The same goes on here in the US.
The progressive left is really the mainstream in German politics and even so called right wing politicians subscribe to a big state, big welfare, LGBTQ rights etc.

I'm a little surprised by this. Everything I hear is about how more conservative/repressive Muslim immigrants relative to the "enlighted Western" populations on LGBTQ and women's equality. Are they more "assimilated" by naturalization or is there a self-selection effect?
The typical German will simply view the Berlin attack as an atrocity by some terrorist extremist and they lack the intellectual tools or indeed inclination to examine root causes here or if they do they will get that analysis wrong and they will view with suspicion anyone who suggests there was a degree of credibility to the murderers anger.

You're not understanding what I'm doing. Im actually working against the tribalism and the boxes people are put into, by using reverse psychology or 'fairness-retaliation' to help others *understand*..
