I have found the NT Wright podcast with fellow theologian Mike Bird on YouTube. I enjoy their insights and openness to discussing wide-ranging theological issues with people from all different backgrounds. I agree with about 95% of what they say, and take the rest with a grain of salt (e.g. infant baptism). Growing up Adventist, I was immersed in a cultural understanding that "we have 'The Truth'", and we need to help everyone else get on board. Now, my secular work daily connects me with Christians of many denominations, and I am increasingly convinced that we all struggle with similar issues and situations. We have much in common and Christ has followers from many walks of life.
This has gotten me thinking. Does the SDA denomination have a scholar like NT Wright who is well grounded in SDA theology, but also realizes that there is more to Christianity than just those elements that make SDA unique? For example, will they talk only about the 7th day Sabbath, or will they also address all the myriad of other factors that make one a better follower of Christ?
When I think about current SDA evangelists, such as Doug Bachelor, I think about someone trying to turn non-SDA Christians into SDA Christians. A YouTube search for "SDA Evangelist" brings up either videos against the SDA denomination, or videos of pastors in suit-and-tie behind a pulpit. I know this seems petty, but I find neckties a sign of irrelevance.
When I was younger, Morris Vendon seemed more down to earth. And I'm sure there are others. But I don't know who they are. But currently, there is no one that I would feel comfortable recommending to a non-SDA Christian friend.
Question: Who are your favorite SDA speakers? Who would you recommend for helping to become a Christian, though not necessarily a SDA?
