  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Democratic candidates: You be the judge.

The solution to that is simple. If people want any of the other parties other than Republican and Democrat to have power, all they have to do is vote for them. What else could they possibly do? Nothing prevents someone who likes the Green Party, Or Constitution Party, or any other party from voting for any of them in any given election.
Actually, there's sometimes a whole lot of electoral red tape that can make it difficult for anyone who's not a Democrat or Republican to be on the ballot. So a lot of times people don't even have that option.

Even setting that aside, you still run into the fundamental problem of first past the post voting, which is that due to fears about vote splitting, as well as the fact that your vote ends up irrelevant if you didn't vote for the winning candidate, people naturally cluster behind the two frontrunners out of necessity (which of course metastasizes into every election and creates a two party system). After all, you inherently threw your vote away if you vote for anyone other than the winner.

Various other voting systems help solve this. Proportional representation, for example, means your vote wasn't necessarily wasted even if if the candidate/party you voted for doesn't get the most votes, because they can still get some seats. Ranked choice voting lets you put your most preferred candidate first but still, if they don't win, let your secondary vote count towards one of the major candidates. And there are other options also. Simply saying "people can vote for other parties" ignores the way first-past-the-post voting is essentially rigged against anything that isn't whatever the two major parties are. It's why, with only a few short-lived exceptions, the US has been a two-party system essentially its entire history.

Though, even though the US is a two-party system, the parties nowadays are also surprisingly impotent. That's because the primary system mostly takes the ability to choose candidates out of the actual hands of the parties themselves. I don't think you'd see someone like Graham Platner chosen outside of a primary system.

Claire Valdez : Political Platform & Core Issues
Valdez’s campaign heavily reflects her background in labor and grassroots socialist organizing. Her core policy objectives on her Official Campaign Website include: [1, 2]
  • Housing for All: Advocating for public housing, fully funding the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), and supporting the federal Homes Act to curtail private market speculation. [1]
  • Labor Movement: Pushing to strengthen and pass the PRO Act, eliminate "at-will" employment, and support nationwide union organizing. [1]
  • Immigration Reform: Fighting to abolish the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency and establishing a direct pathway to citizenship. [1, 2]
  • Foreign Policy: Calling for Palestinian liberation, standing against the military assault in Gaza, and demanding that federal funds be redirected from foreign military spending to domestic community resources. [1, 2, 3] Source Google AI: Here is my question on candidates like this. How is this consistent with the constitution and intent of our country’s founding?
Oooh, I like her! Hope she wins a seat in Congress, we could really use someone like her.

Independent is an actual political party. "MAGA" is not.
Maybe not yet, but Trump's doing all he can to make the Republican party 100% MAGA.

Article 4 Section 4

Explain how people who claim to be socialist and communist can be elected to office and honor their oath to uphold the constitution that guarantees a Republican form of government?

1) win election
2) take oath
3) follow existing law and attempt to implement changes via legal means while in office

Not the sort of comment one wants to see on a Christian forum.

Every time I come here I see all sorts of things I don't want to see on a Christian forum--like support for a philandering adjudicated rapist conman and megalomaniac. But here we are.

Sounds like you have it all figured out. We just elect a bunch of socialists and communists and thereby trash the constitution. So Article 4 Section 4 is meaningless. Got it.

So if you find them offensive, then as a representative of Christ, be offensive right back.

I guess worry when that happens, but it’s not happening now.

Independent is typically used to describe voters who are not registered as members of a political party.

Campaign finance laws have little to do with there not being a 4 party system. What causes that is the voting system. United States has first past the post voting. The way that works is you vote for one candidate and whoever gets the most votes wins. This is a voting system that is almost guaranteed to ensure there are only two major political parties. After all, everyone knows that if you didn't vote for the winner your vote essentially didn't matter at all, so people will constantly try to figure out who the two leading candidates are, then vote for the one they like more of those two, even if there's another candidate they'd want. This naturally leads to there only being two major political parties. Bring in something like proportional representation (people vote for their preferred party and each party gets the same percentage of seats as people who voted for their party) and you'd see more parties in congress.

True. However, people's perception of who the "winner" will be is heavily influence by a candidate's perceived ability to raise large amounts of money. And money is tied to the two existing major parties.

Remove money as a factor and the field would level open up. IMO, we should implement a system where only publicly sourced campaign funds can be used. Prohibit private contributions (invidividual & corportate).

True but if you look up RFK jr, for party it's going say Independent. There's no politician listed with Party: MAGA. Being an Independent means you can be supporter of any politician or party or movement. Basically like being a non-denominational Christian.

Also like not being in a political party.
