Realistically, a 4-party system is unlikely to survive for any length of time in a country with first-past-the-post voting. We might go through a period of having 3-4 parties as the current main players sort themselves out, but in a matter of a few election cycles, it'll settle back down to a 2-party system just because of how our voting works.

I don't know if we can have 4 party system. From what I gather on this forum is that campaign finance laws are the problem, and RFK had to become a Republican to work for the government because of it, I think.

The solution to that is simple. If people want any of the other parties other than Republican and Democrat to have power, all they have to do is vote for them. What else could they possibly do? Nothing prevents someone who likes the Green Party, Or Constitution Party, or any other party from voting for any of them in any given election.
Campaign finance laws have little to do with there not being a 4 party system. What causes that is the voting system. United States has first past the post voting. The way that works is you vote for one candidate and whoever gets the most votes wins. This is a voting system that is almost guaranteed to ensure there are only two major political parties. After all, everyone knows that if you didn't vote for the winner your vote essentially didn't matter at all, so people will constantly try to figure out who the two leading candidates are, then vote for the one they like more of those two, even if there's another candidate they'd want. This naturally leads to there only being two major political parties. Bring in something like proportional representation (people vote for their preferred party and each party gets the same percentage of seats as people who voted for their party) and you'd see more parties in congress.

Campaigns are costly, and Citizens United has had a corrosive effect on competition. A level playing field would be more responsive to voters instead of big business.
