  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Specifically, verse 29. These are the words of Jesus, God in the flesh. So, here's the problem: Everyone does both good and bad (evil). That makes this verse incredibly squishy. It causes people to wonder if they've done "enough" good, or "too much" bad. Yet the gospel says ALL have sinned... So that means NOBODY has "done good", or at least done "enough" good to receive the resurrection of life. Thanks be to the Lord for his plan. But I feel like this verse muddies the water for those of us who believe Jesus' sacrifice, not our "good works" is what brings us to the resurrection of life.

Can anyone offer some clarity about where I've gone off the rails here?

Replace done, with are, or that have (or will) in the end, or by that time, are found out later by others to be, either good, or else bad, etc, for God already knows/knew, and even already caused both, etc. So it's not any good that you can do, but that God already purposed to be done by you/through you, but with him having already done it a long, long time ago already, etc. For the rest of us none of this is revealed until that time that the scripture you are referring to talks about, etc.

My advice is to just do your best to not have and evil, wicked heart, or wrong reasons/motives for the good you do, or are doing, or plan to do, and just try to do good when and where you can, and you'll probably be ok, if that's the way God already made you already, etc, like I said, for the rest of us that's not fully revealed until that time that that scripture is talking about, or at the very end of this entire time maybe, etc.

The righteous are so called because they are indwelled by Jesus and surrender to His will, allowing His Righteousness to work through them.

How can we live as Christ lives if we still commit offenses?
Ephesians 4:32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted,
forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Are we judged for our offenses, or our forgiveness of offenses?
Matthew 7:1 Judge not, that you be not judged.
2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged;
and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.

Who will receive mercy in judgment?
Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.

James 2:23 For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy.
Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Can we "believe" our way to a favorable judgment, or must we

Part of doing good is to trust in Christ for salvation.

Then, since we want to please God, we submit to Him so He has us doing the good that He desires.

And so, 0ne thing Jesus means by the scripture is that we trust God to take care of us so we do what is good. And we do not doubt how God is so able to have us living well >

“casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)

We do not each live in isolation, then, worrying about our own selves, but we share as family to bless and to help one another > this is included in doing good.

It is not only about good or bad works, then, but how we do the good of trusting and depending on God and sharing with one another as family. This is good to do.

Yes, “Accept Jesus’ free gift.” And included in the package deal of salvation is how we are guaranteed God’s correction > Hebrews 12:4-14 < so we are changed in our character to share with God in His holiness . . . in His love’s “peaceable fruit of righteousness”. This is guaranteed to every person who has trusted in Jesus.

So . . . trust Him for this. And do not only trust some ideas, but submit to God in order for Him to change us so we are His way . . . so that we are doing all that ***He*** means by doing good . . . not merely what we might boast about, or worry is not enough.

And you might read and feed on Galatians 6:7-8 . . . about how we will reap what we have sown. We are becoming how we will be for eternity. How we become . . . this is how we will be reaped to become so much more strongly > in the corruption of a self-seeking personality, or in the likeness of Jesus.

“For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.” (Romans 8:29)

So - - - salvation, and what works we do, is a matter of what is possible with God. We trust God to have us succeeding with Him and to guide us.
