  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Simulations and the Bible?

I believe I'm probably in a simulation (maybe like the Roy game from Rick and Morty)
see:

I had some thoughts about how a simulation could be relevant to the Bible

e.g.
- it could make a physical world that is indistinguishable from reality
- it could allow supernatural beings to exist
- it could allow God to be omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent (especially if he was implemented with AI or an uploaded mind)
- it allows teleporting and having control over time (change time speed or go into the past or future)

the first video in the thread I linked shows you can start with a picture (including drawings) or a description and then go into that world

- generative AI could be controlled with voice commands like in Genesis 1

so it could also allow all of the miracles in the Bible including the parting of the Red Sea, God's hand writing text on the wall, coming back from the dead, the fishes and loaves, walking on water, rising up to heaven, exorcisms, etc.

It could allow dimensions that are outside of the physical universe (like heaven and hell)

One of the only things in the Bible I'm aware of that can't be achieved using simulations is simulating a literal eternity.

Note an eternity is infinitely longer than a googolplex - and a googolplex is a 1 with a googol zeroes and a googol is a 1 with 100 zeroes.

But I think a googolplex years for heaven or hell is good enough.

And there's Ecclesiastes 11:5
As you do not know the path of the wind,
or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb,
so you cannot understand the work of God,
the Maker of all things.
So is the simulation explanation wrong because humans will never know how God works?

I guess the alternative to the simulation explation is that things just mysteriously happen kind of like magic.

BTW there is an earlier attempt by humans to try and understand how God works - the Jewish mysticism of Kabbalah: (but I think it is nonsense)

Another issue is that everything that is in a simulation had a beginning but I think the Bible says God didn’t have a beginning.

God can do all things you mentioned not magically. We will be able to understand when we are in heaven but for now…. This is not a simulation it is reality. The other seems like fantasy. Maybe you want to do or to see something so bad…. But it’s just not happening this is reality boring, unaccentuating sometimes. When Jesus was here it was an exciting time. Read it in the Bible be excited, believe it’s true. But work out your salvation daily with what you know from the Bible and enjoy.

What is different in heaven? Are our intellects bigger and our current intellects aren't capable of understanding the mechanisms? Or do we have the same intellects and hidden knowledge is revealed to us?
but for now…. This is not a simulation it is reality.
Apparently Job 34:14–15 says “If he withdrew his spirit and breath, all humanity would perish… and return to dust.” So it seems God is part of this world rather than it having an independent existence.

I don't believe in Jesus literally rising from the dead though - but that is easy to do in a Bible based simulation.

BTW simulations can also explain the soul... you can have personalities that are independent of atoms, etc.

I wish I could heal. But it is God given. But that would be playing God. It not Gods will for us to heal. It would take a lot of prayer to be given such a gift. Heaven will be revealed in time.

that is a very good scripture and thank you for it. That is almost awesome, only God is awesome. He is the only awesome God’. Job 34:14-15 wow God is so forbearing and patient with us. We have his life even if not saved, it is a gift from God. Our very lives…. He is a part of us and that is reality- almost awesome.

jesus did rise from the dead and so did Lazarus and others. That is reality. If he didn’t to prove everything he said was true we would have no basis of faith and his words would have no life in them. It is recorded by the apostles. It is key to the faith of Christian’s. If you take it out what do you gain but uncertainty and doubt and trouble and no peace. Believe on the lord Jesus Christ like a little child as a mustard seed, just as it is. With God all things are possible and true. He loves you the Bible is true from cover to cover. How can you quote Job and not realize that his life is in us because he lives. He has risen in deed.

if simulations can believe the resurrection and explain the soul then take that wisdom from them and leave the rest. Incorporate it into your life and be the better for it. I glean from my mind some things sometimes but I do not have it full reign over my life. Just the things it gets right. My mind is my enemy often times but I will not be ruled by my flesh. It’s so often the world the flesh and the devil and not righteous.

Why do you try to thoroughly understand God's power, souls, life and death, etc? It's way above us. They might work in a way we can't even comprehend. If you engage too deep, it'll backfire. But if you really want to know, wait until you're in heaven, we're not as limited there.

Also, God doesn't need any simulation to have omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience. Simulations are a human idea; they could never match up to God's power. Whatever method of control God uses to control this world, we're given little information about it, and we don't need jt.

What is different in heaven? Are our intellects bigger and our current intellects aren't capable of understanding the mechanisms? Or do we have the same intellects and hidden knowledge is revealed to us?
Our sight and comprehension are limited. There are many, many things you can't see, and you can't comprehend. For example, God is omnipresent, but you can't see him. God sends angels down, but we don't see them. Etc. In heaven, this probably changes. It's not about intellect or processing power, but ability, which is far higher.
So it seems God is part of this world rather than it having an independent existence
God is independent. If this world perishes, nothing happens to God. If this world lives, nothing happens to God. But without God, the world perishes. So, God is independent of the world.

I guess being a "know it all" appeals to me. I like having relatively straight-forward explanations for things that are supposed to be unknowable.
It's way above us. They might work in a way we can't even comprehend. If you engage too deep, it'll backfire. But if you really want to know, wait until you're in heaven, we're not as limited there.
Well we are beginning to understand the things at the start of Ecclesiastes 11:5 so then maybe it is possible to understand God on this basic level.
Also, God doesn't need any simulation to have omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience.
But I don't think they can be thoroughly explained without simulations.
Simulations are a human idea; they could never match up to God's power.
What about the robes that angels and maybe God would wear? Are they a human idea too? Or did God put the idea of robes into the minds of early humans? i.e. maybe some things that humans have come up with could have been used by God before humans were created...

Our sight and comprehension are limited. There are many, many things you can't see, and you can't comprehend. For example, God is omnipresent, but you can't see him.
That's how a "camera" in a game/simulation works - they are invisible by default. There could be many cameras/displays.
God sends angels down, but we don't see them. Etc.
It's easy to make things invisible in a simulation/game - even having them be only visible to certain people.
In heaven, this probably changes. It's not about intellect or processing power, but ability, which is far higher.

God is independent. If this world perishes, nothing happens to God. If this world lives, nothing happens to God. But without God, the world perishes. So, God is independent of the world.
Well it is possible to have a simulation that requires something like God to continue to function. But mainstream physicists would say that a physical universe just needs the laws of physics (or something) to continue to function rather than always requiring an infinite conscious being.

BTW here are things that God could do in a world (e.g. heaven) that would be impossible in our physical world but can be explained in terms of a simulation/game:
It could be like the TARDIS in Doctor Who where the inside is bigger than the outside (so that "mansions" don't take up so much space on the outside)

Mate, stop that line of thinking. You don't even know what God looks like to need clothes. You could be saying something terribly insulting without knowing.

Or it could be a megabrain with information about all particles stored in an array. Or it could be that God is countless particles, attached to all the smallest particles of matter, and that's how he detects things. Or it could be something else. We don't know.

What about angels wearing robes? Do you think people came up with the idea of robes or did they copy God's idea?

I don't know. I haven't seen all angels to judge whether any wore robes. In fact, I haven't seen angels at all. But I doubt the artists have either. They're guessing it or making it up.

They came up with the idea, and they're wrong. And even if we end up seeing angels in robes when we go to heaven, they're still wrong, because they guessed it without proof.

I just don't get your point. The rules of physics and the world are all like toys to God's. God can do anything. And just as he created the universe, he can end it, or modify it however he wants. I see that if it was a simulation, it would be a limitation instead.

By the way, sorry if I sounded rude to you. It's just that this is extremely dangerous territory and I want you to be more cautious about it.

There's this:

Revelation 15:6 — Seven angels “dressed in clean and bright linen” with golden sashes.
Acts 1:10 — Two angels appear to the disciples “in white apparel.”
Acts 10:30 — Cornelius sees an angel “in shining garments.”
Daniel 10:5 — A heavenly being is described wearing linen with a belt of gold.
Ezekiel 9:2 — Angels involved in judgment are “clothed in linen.”

I think either angels originally wore clothing or they didn't wear clothing... though I've seen pictures of naked baby angels (cherubs). Anyway my point is that God could have originally used things that people thought up on their own.

No basically anything that can be imagined is possible in a simulation except an eternity and something without a beginning (or maybe that can be addressed to some degree). In a simulation it is even possible to turn the world into a cartoon. People can say that God can do whatever he wants but that doesn't explain how it works. i.e. simulations have a better explanatory ability. vs saying just have faith that God could have somehow done that.

BTW I was wondering what you think about Jewish people who believed in Kabbalah:

I think it is similar - they were also trying to understand God though I think it is nonsense.

It's a bit like Satan saying "...you will be like God, knowing good and evil" but in this case it could be "be like God and understand how god-like powers could work".

Sorry, I'm not Christian and I don't use the bible. If you use the bible, then yes, angels do have clothes, but it doesn't seem to state the type of clothing, just states clothing or garments.

I take the power to do anything he wants as a base for all his powers.

I think God created the universe and all the laws of physics. And when he created them, he created a control room. But who knows how many buttons a control room like that would have, and what form God takes that he can operate it seamlessly. So I don't see the need for a simulation.

As for the Kabbalah people, you're looking at the fog of history, and they're in essence probably terrible people. It's a waste of time to look into them.

The laws of physics could run on a computer. An alternative is that they run on God. A control room with buttons is similar to computer input/output like a keyboard and a screen. Having a control room suggests something other than God is directly controlling physics - that there is a system between God and the physical universe.
