  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump fired the entire National Science Board yesterday!

Fair enough.

This Pluto stuff says a lot about you guys.

A LOT.

Probably a lot less than you think.

As Marcus Aurelius said: "You always own the option of having no opinion. There is never any need to get worked up or to trouble your soul about things you can't control. These things are not asking to be judged by you. Leave them alone."

That's not the issue.

They went out of their way to get Pluto demoted for some reason.

What if you found out our President Trump got in office that way?
Let’s stay on topic, please! The demotion of Pluto has nothing to do with Trump firing a science board.

Take care

The final word on this Pluto diversion....

Being labelled a crook by AV for supporting the IAU decision, I admit being one of the beneficiaries as I was able to meet the great man.

Apparently a lot of people don't understand that there can be no agency of the Federal Government that is independent of the Executive, Legislative, or Judicial branches. Any agency that is alleged to have such independence is illegitimate and needs to be abolished, because its existence is unconstitutional.

What are you talking about? We are talking about agencies created by law.

An unconstitutional law. There are three branches of the Federal Government, not four, and there can be no agency of the Federal government that's independent from them.

So it's right as long as it's legal? Do you really want to open that can of worms?

What in the world are you on about? I've heard a few incoherent things this month, and that's near the top of the list.

My comment was 100% coherent.
Trump fired the staff of the National Science Board.
You said that he was right to since the NSB was 'unconstitutional', Trump was in the right to do so.
Just because something is legally right, does not make it morally or ethically right.

No one with any authority has called the NSB or the NSF "unconstitutional", nor did Trump use it as an excuse when he dismissed the board.

It's an excuse to try and justify it, plain and simple.

Ah! I understand. Your question is "is it always the right thing to disband an unconstitutionally established government agency that is independent of the the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches".

In every case the answer is YES, even if I agree with every decision of that agency. Any such agency is illegitimate, having no lawful basis for existence. The only way to change that is to first amend the Constitution.

That's a terribly slippery slope and sounds like a way to excuse Trump firing a board of scientists for no other reason than his own vanity and anti-intellectualism in the Republican party and America at large.

That's a terribly slippery slope...
Making sure that the Government abides by the Constitution is a slippery slope?

That kind of thinking is very dangerous to a free society. You may prefer to live in a totalitarian state, but the rest of us do not. Feel free to move elsewhere.

Except that this ISN'T about abiding by the Constitution. That's the claim you're making. Trump's acts MAY be constitutionally valid, but they are not an act he's done for anything but his own desire. Just because something follows the letter of the law does not mean that it is just or right.

Let's turn this another way: how, in constitutionally removing the scientists from the National Science Board, is Trump doing a good thing for the people of America?

What part of the Constitution establishes a branch of the Federal Government that is independent of the Legislative, Executive, or Judicial branches?

I missed a word. I meant to say "that this ISN'T about". My mistake.
