  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

July 6, 2026 President Trump posts a video of kindergartners at a graduation ceremony at the Gateway STEM Academy in St Paul, Minnesota requoting the bigoted comment “Public school in St. Paul, Minnesota. Every girl is in a hijab … in kindergarten.” Thousands of replies piled on with further vile attacks against five-year olds.

“Imagine if these kids were children who were wearing yarmulkes,” she said. “Imagine the reaction people would have. We would all be angry because we should be, because they are just as American as anyone else. And these kids who are wearing a hijab are just as American as the child who goes to a Catholic school that wears a particular uniform.” Minnesota state senator Z. Mohamed.

While nobody should be attacking the five year olds themselves (obviously -- and if people were doing that, shame on them... the kids are victims of their household environments and an oppressive religion)

Putting little girls in hijabs has more concerning cultural implications than young Jewish boys wearing kippahs. (so that was a rather poor comparison for the MN state senator to use)

Given that one of the doctrinal purposes behind the hijab is within a quite one-sided misogynistic modesty framework that seeks to prevent causing men to lust, it's definitely more than just a bit concerning that they feel the need to make 5 year olds wear them when you think about what that implies. (are there that many guys in that community who would otherwise be attracted to girls that young?? if so, sounds like a cultural practice that we'd rather not import from that part of the world, as that would be a safety concern for anyone who has a non-Muslim daughter who doesn't wear one living in that area)

As where, the kippah/yarmulke is merely a symbolic hat, worn on the top of the head as a reminder that "God is always above" in Judaism.

The original article is behind a paywall, but does it mention him attacking the 5 year olds?, or attacking that particular subset of Muslim culture that feels the need to put 5 year old in "male gaze prevention" garments?

In my previous post, I mentioned the concerning implications behind that practice. Even for adult women, it's concerning, but the implications of them putting 5 year olds in them implies something even more sinister.

Plus, it would seem as if the practice of putting girls that young in hijabs is somewhat unique to the Somali diaspora. Apart from Iran (who's even relaxed their harsh rules on it, and prior had an age of 12 enforced by chastity laws), most of the rest of the Muslim world (countries like Egypt, Turkey, Indonesia, etc...), they either use adulthood or marriage based norms, or make it a personal choice.

Re-posting a tweet, Rob.

I have no desire to go down your rabbit trail. There's a theology section if you have an issue with religious garb.

This has less to do with purely cosmetic aspects of "garb", but rather pointing out what it signifies and that's it's completely valid to be concerned about importing large numbers of people from a culture where pedophilia and sex abuse is normalized.

What a marvelous bit of sophistry. Now we know for certain that Islam does terrible things to children so those muslims don't belong here. They're bad and the President was right to support their demonization. I'm sure that's exactly what those muslim parents thought. 'My poor five-year old being lusted after.' We are drowning in fear and loathing people. This will not turn out well.

It seems like you're trying awfully hard to justify Trump's discriminiation.

Say Rob, do you believe all relgious groups should have the freedom to worship and dress their children according to their reglious tradition? Or are you carving out an exception for Islam?

Another day, another invented problem by the administration designed to rile up his base who know no better. Whoopie doo.

it's not an "invented problem"

If it was my neighborhood, and it got flooded with people from a culture resembling this:

I certainly wouldn't be viewing it as a "whoopie doo, this is just a bogus culture war" situation.

I've gone just as hard on the FLDS (the fundamentalist sect of Mormonism) and Hasidic sect of Judaism for similar infractions.

The difference is Utah and Brooklyn are the part of the United States and so it's not a case of importing more of the problem.

If the FLDS was located in some other country and not Utah, and there was large amounts of them trying to come here, I'd be saying "no, leave that Warren Jeffs underage polygamy nonsense at the door, we don't want that here".

Let's face it. The U.S. has a very long history of religious violence against Catholics, Jews, LDS, Native American religions and don’t forget the KKK. Does that mean all Christians are violent terrorists waiting to emerge once more?? No. Demonizing Islam is exactly that…demonizing. Why do it? Easy answer...because fear and loathing is a powerful political force.

I presented the distinction. I didn't say "all Muslims" (I specifically highlighted the contrast between Somalia vs. places like Egypt & Turkey)

Given that the hijab is meant to deter sexual attraction, the fact that they're putting their 5 year olds in them indicates that it's a culture where attraction to girls that young is somewhat normalized.

1783951938109.png

45% of girls from that culture are married off before 18, with some married off as young as 9-10.

"it's normal to be attracted to girls that young, so in order to prevent male lust, the onus is on the female to cover from head to toe, because her causing another man to lust would be a sin on her part" is not a social attitude I want more of in the country.

Somali culture arguably has a more regressive track record in this area than Iran.

And in the year 2026, we wouldn't go out of way to pretend that importing a bunch of KKK members from abroad was somehow a net-positive or net-neutral thing would we?

Pointing out bad things that the US did 100 years ago (after we've already recognized the problematic nature and course-corrected) as some sort of justification for turning a blind eye to things present day is flawed logic.

On the contrary, those acts of violence were motivated by fear and loathing. The same certainty that those immigrants from that time (as well as the indigenous) would destroy our country. The same fear and loathing driving a desire to demonize muslims.
I would also note that every instance in our history, as you observed, was misguided. Never once did it turn out that suppressing them was the right thing to do. This will be no different.

So the purpose of the hijab: Functions as a shield for women's dignity, allowing them to be valued for their character and intellect rather than their physical

So the purpose of the catholic school girl’s uniform: Encouraging Modesty and Professionalism

So the purpose of the conservative Jewish girl’s religious garb: Kippah: Wearing it is a constant symbol of submission to God's authority. Tallit: a visual reminder of God’s commandments.

So the purpose of the conservative Christian girl’s attire: If makeup is worn, it tends to be natural, understated, and intended to enhance rather than draw dramatic attention. Accessories are generally simple and classic. Prominent cross necklaces are common to outwardly display faith. Hairstyles are often kept long or styled neatly, emphasizing traditional femininity.

Every single one of those clothing articles worn to express religious faith can easily be demonized and all of them have been in the past and still are by those who have fallen into the various sophistries of fear and loathing.

Is your solution that young Muslim girls shouldn't be wearing a hijab or that all of these people should simply be excluded from our religiously pluralistic society where freedom of religion is a constitutional guarantee? Of course you don't have any comment on the President singling out a religious community for them to be targeted by his hateful base. That's sadly the most normal, least surprising part of this story.

I would suggest you learn something about the upper midwest. No girl in Minnesota is married *before* 18.

It's reflective of the general attitudes about women/girls that are pervasive in the culture.

Just because we legally forbid marriage on paper before 18 doesn't mean that the underlying behaviors aren't taking place.

Look at the problematic nature of this story... apart from the disgusting details of the actual events, the fact that his family and Somali community religious leaders came forward to protest his sentencing on the basis that "he was a good man", claiming he had good character and insisting he was an important community member may give one the impression that they have a very different view on those kinds of matters than we do.

It seems like they were viewing the assault against girls with the same blasé attitude on may have towards something far less serious like petty theft or vandalism.
