Who will be eaten first?
It's a fantasy setting, not real life history. The topic actually makes sense in the fantasy culture portrayed in the game. I do agree that it is handled clumsily, though, as many other things in that game.Look at veilguard, there is extensive parts of some 'medieval setting non binary person struggles'
I can't play a game like that, i don't want that in my games,
first it doesn't make any sense in a medieval setting
I think part of the problem is that a lot of modern AAA games feel more focused on trends, monetization, and online arguments than just making a genuinely fun game people want to spend hundreds of hours in. Most players honestly care more about good gameplay, memorable characters, and polished releases than whatever debate is happening around the game. At the same time though, I don’t think every modern game is bad, there are still studios making amazing stuff, especially outside the biggest publishers. Feels more like people are tired of being talked down to instead of listened to.Modern gaming especially the western side has an ideological problem. It is captured by the progressive movement. Now, progressive is a very big umbrella term but the telltale signs of them are quite similar, an opposition to traditional gaming tropes, visual design element and story framing. It is real life western social movements such as CRT, DEI, LGBTQ+, feminists and social justice manifesting in digital entertainment mediums and the ecosystem that surrounds them. A shorthand for all these is called the Modern Audience.
Modern Audience in gaming is the concept that society have moved pass the old values that grew the video gaming industry to what is it today. The notion that the majority gamers hold progressive values and woke ideologies and demand their entertainment to hold to the same standards. The old guard of gamers are no longer a market force to cater to. The implication that it is the only business pivot that makes money sense. And to their credit they have managed to bamboozled a lot of gaming studios and publishers to move in that direction. From creating games with progressives design language to hiring progressive workers.
However they have missed one critical point there is no such thing as the Modern Audience in gaming. Gamers still gravitate to old school tried and tested design language from game mechanics, story to aesthetics. While small doses of progressive manifestation in games are usually tolerated, the manifestations taking center stage is where the industry broke then camel's back. Gamers revolted and the environment became hostile. One side wanting to push their agenda another side wanted to be left alone to a hobby they escape the real world to.
Here is the kicker, the industry backed the wrong horse in this race. The vaunted Modern Audience is a phantom consumer. Catering to this apparition is as good as burning money and good will the developers earned through hard work and dedication in the decades past. Progressive games or games build on progressive design language always get good media and online support. Games like Dustborn, Relooted, Assasin Creed: Shadows, Concord, High Guard and the latest 1384 Ex Voto. The pattern of gamer engagements are the same, gamers see social ideological design and get upset, the developers can't keep their mouths shut and proceed to stoke the flames by mocking and denigrating the gamers, the progressive crowds cheer for the game and the releases are meet with low sales and playtime. Inevitability this causes the developers to fall way short of ROI.
At the same time, a lot of gamers have started moving toward online communities connected to crypto, online casinos, and digital platforms because those spaces still feel more focused on entertainment and user experience instead of constantly pushing messaging into everything. I was actually reading about swyftx nz recently since a lot of online casino players now use crypto platforms for deposits and withdrawals, especially on newer crypto casinos where people want faster payments and more privacy. It’s interesting how much overlap there is now between gaming culture, crypto trading, and online gambling communities, especially with younger players who already spend most of their time in digital ecosystems anyway.
Here are the stats.
Game Current Players All-Time Peak Est. Total Players/Sales Current Fate Dustborn ~2 83 ~11,000 – 13,000 The game is still available for purchase, but it has essentially no active community Relooted ~1 57 ~1,600 The game is still available for purchase, but it has essentially no active community AC: Shadows ~3,700 64,825 ~1.1 Million Ubisoft facing financial troubles due to high development cost and low sales and the company created multiple studios with investment by Tencent to move their IPs into new studios. Concord 0 (Offline) 697 ~25,000 (Refunded) Sony officially shut down the game and closed Firewalk Studios in October 2024 High Guard (free to play) ~500 97,249 ~2.1 Million After losing over 99% of its launch peak the game was shut down on 12 March 2026 1348: Ex Voto ~59 427 < 5,000 New release struggling to find an audience
So again we can confer that Modern Audience is not an audience at all. They will only give you verbal or digital support. Where the money counts they can't be counted on to pull you through. Likewise the same can be said for the movie industry.
You actually made the best argument for my point actually. Is it fun? Answer is no. Many things make a game unfun. Overt wokeness like Dragon Age: the Veilguard, Concord, and the now flopped South of Midnight create an environment where fun and emersion are being drained from the gamers. What if I put hardcore Christian values into says good game like the Sims, where instead of choosing your own relationships and design your own house, you have only one option or majority options that are religious based. Not just religious based overtly religious based. Even I wouldn't want to play that. It is not what I play a game for. Sim's mechanics are great but the presentation will be ruined by overt messaging.I feel like the phrase "touch grass" exists for things like this.
As a gamer I can tell you what matters most to me in a game.
Is it fun?

To further my argument where presentation is a important as mechanics and story, character design. You know why Street Fighter has memorable characters? Because they are designed that way, it is a representation of general taste. AND the better the design the more enduring its presence is. Ryu, Chun Li, Cammy, Ken and even new comer Juri. Capcom knew that antagonist Seth is badly designed and no one likes him, so for the next series they turn him into a her. Immediately her popularity shot up. Not just a her but a stereotype of a yandere her. Beautiful on the outside but insane on the inside. Why because presentation mattered. They understood that a large portion of people love beautiful crazy woman.
When you have good designs, you improve the overall likability, gameplay and story alone can't carry modern games. In fact using your own example of Samus Aran, it is the reveal that made the character endearing. No one remembers Bill Rizer from Contra. Samus Aran is like the gift that keep giving same like Chun Li. They can jump genre is because they are created in the language of the general appeal. Chun Li alone has been licensed to so many other companies in her sexy design for a reason. And that reason is sales.
You're not going to see Dragon Age: the Veilguard Taash being licensed out, anytime soon while RPG characters like Tifa and Cloud are in other games. Why? Well everyone knows why, only few dare say why.
Meh. You're looking reasons to confirm a bias, not an actual trends. Your comment is no different than if I said "the designers of GTA drink water, their game is successful, therefore the key to making successful games is to drink more water."You actually made the best argument for my point actually. Is it fun? Answer is no.
I guess you forgot that Eagle is gay, Poison is transgender, and Marisa is bisexual. You know why Street Fighter has memorable characters? Cloud has a gay sex scene at the bathhouse while he is crossdressing. You're not going to see Dragon Age: the Veilguard Taash being licensed out, anytime soon while RPG characters like Tifa and Cloud are in other games. Why? Well everyone knows why, only few dare say why.
