John 4:23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." NKJV
The Father wants worshipers who worship Him in spirit and truth. When we first believed in Jesus, we received His Spirit and were baptized in His Spirit.
What did God do to get people who worshiped Him in spirit?
John 12:24 Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. NKJV
Because He had died sinless, His Spirit caused us to be born from above as a spirit.
2 Corinthians 5:14 For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; 15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. 16 Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, NKJV
The believer is a new creation. He is a Spirit contained within a flesh body that has been forgiven of its sins. John 1: 12 he has been given the right to become a child of God. John 14:27 believers are gifted the peace of Jesus. John 15:11 the joy of Jesus. Colossians 1: 3-5 hope in Jesus, saving faith in Jesus and love for all the saints. 1Corinthians 2:16 the mind of Jesus. The only thing not new is the believer's mind and body. If the mind was new, the person's identity would be gone.
God now had people who could worship Him in spirit.
What did God do to ensure that people worshiped Him in truth?
2 items in the above scripture (2Corinthians 5:14-18) that I want to note. First verse 15 it reads “that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them.” God does not make them live for Jesus. He gives them a choice to live for Him or not.
The second items is in verse 16 reads “we regard no one according to the flesh.” What Paul is saying is that we cannot know the new spirit man by observing the flesh man. We can never know a person by what they do, but it is even harder when the true person is a spirit hidden in a flesh body. All spiritual worship does not show through the flesh. Matthew 13: 28-29 that is why Jesus forbid the apostles, who would be far better than ourselves, from eliminating the tares, unbelievers, from the church. In Matthew 13: 29 Jesus said that if we weeded out the tares we would weed out some of His people, that should tell us that works cannot be a good indication of a tare. He also said that He would let His angles weed the tares out just prior to gathering the wheat. Acts 5: 1-11 therefore, anyone the apostles, or God, removed permanently from the assembly of believers were true believers. That is also why we are told not to associate, not to kill, those conducting themselves as we know God does not want His children to conduct themselves.
God proved through the history of His people that ordering His people to obey the law did not work. To ensure that people obeyed Him out of love, not fear, He justified people apart from their deeds taking works out of the equation. God removed the requirement to do good works to be righteous. 2Corinthians 5:14-15, John 16: 8-10 He would only send people to hell for not believing in Jesus. If salvation depended on their works then some people would obey and worship Him out of fear. That would not be true worship or a truthful worshiper. Therefore; Romans 5: 15-16 God made salvation a free gift. Colossians 1: 3-5 if they appreciated what God did for them, (Ephesians 3: 8) they would be gifted with the vehicle through which they were saved. Romans 9:11, Ephesians 2:9 God told them that their works had nothing to do with their salvation. Romans 4:5-8 Romans He told them if they worked for their salvation, that they were not saved. Romans 4:5 God even told them if they did not believe he justified people without good works, that they did not trust Jesus for their salvation. God could now get people to worship Him in truth not out of fear.
He also gave us examples in the scriptures of ungodly people He had justified.
He made salvation a free gift, justification is accomplished without the believer doing anything but believe in Jesus, Jesus did all the work to save everyone in the world who will accept His gift. God did all this so His people would do good works out of love, not fear, and worship Him in spirit and truth.
