  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It was a strange game to watch. Until last night I personally felt that the US team had performed far better than expected, and despite playing weak teams, they had shown real discipline and presence that would seemingly carry over against more seasoned teams.

Last night it looked like a completely different team. Completely disconnected and in disarray.

They were never going to make it that far, but it's a shame their run ended on such a deflated performance.

Yes, if you're going to lose, go out playing your best. It was their worst match by far in the tournament.

I give a lot of credit to the pressing Beligian defense - which never let up...even after Belgium led 3-1. The Americans rarely made it past midfield in the first half and seemed lost. Our only goal came off another outstanding free kick by Tilman.

Which goes to show how much interest/competence Fox News sports commentators have in 'soccer'. Folarin Balogun played a forgettable role in the match - he was on the pitch. Or did they mean that he just did not play properly on the day

Not "Fox News". Fox News is a cable news channel. Fox Sports is a group of sports channels, and (sort of) separate from the Fox Broadcast Network that birthed it. Fox Sports does not have the RW politics orientation of Fox News.

Fox Sports began as the sports division of the Fox Broadcast Network. Their first venture was to get half of the Sunday NFL broadcasts which had a huge impact on the Network and caused local affiliates to switch to the new network to keep their local NFL team on their channel. Fox bought a bunch of local sports networks and built a few cable channels to grow to rival ESPN (which was also buying local sports networks) and Fox Sports was spun off within the same company (Fox Corp).

Fox News was started as a cable news channel and never had more than limited connection to the Fox Broadcast Network. FBN never had a regular national news show (like the other three networks) and FoxNews programming on Fox Broadcast channel only appears with the big, national event including breaking news, major presidential speeches, etc.)

(For more corporate confusion, 20th Century Fox [the movie studio namesake of the whole collection] and the various cable [non-sports/non-news] properties of Fox Cop were sold to Disney who owns ESPN.)
Top comment on Fox Sports video highlights reel:
“Huge respect for Balogun for honoring the suspension and not playing tonight”
Finally, it was a comment from an internet poster under the highlights, not the company itself.

I thought it had something to do with the relative position of the offensive and defensive players. Are you implying that that "offsides" rule only applies in limited area of the field (10 yard from the end line)?
No, I misunderstood your post. It does apply to the relative positions of the offense - any part of the body unable to touch the ball (i.e., the arm from the shoulder to the hand) can be past the last defender. Any other part can't.
Maybe it's just avoiding the offsides rule, but I was (on set plays) referring to how the defenders are closer to the goal and get chance (usually) to line up first to avoid a violation.
Right, usually, but they don't have to be anywhere in particular.

Article 66.4 in the FIFA disciplinary code states "if a player or team official is sent off as a result of a direct or indirect red card [for a second yellow card], they will automatically be suspended from their team's subsequent match."

Rule 10.5 also specifies that further penalties can be added, but FIFA sources have said that there is no route to appeal a red card at the tournament.

HERE
As RocksInMyHead pointed out, there is Article 27, which states, and I quote: "We're FIFA. We can do whatever we want."

I hear that the 2038 World Cup is to be held again in North America. I also hear that FIFA will raise the number of competing teams to 200. Given that are presently only 195 nations in the world, uh, we'll have to make something up.

Ahaahaha Im actually shocked you know that lyric. Now theres a great song! One of my faves of theirs.
Okay, full disclosure: I didn't know that lyric. I asked Grok what Rush songs mention bridges, y'know, because of that "crossed the River Alph" ? or something. Their muse just seems to demand a bunch of bridges. But sadly, there were only two (although there might be a third in Red Barchetta but I'm not going to waste time looking up Rush lyrics). Anyway, I'm glad you knew it, and I hope you appreciate how hard I work to try to impress you.

It can be both heartbreaking and beautiful when top athletes and their teams lose while still giving thanks to God for His blessings. Last night, the U.S. men's soccer team bowed for a final prayer on the field after losing a gut-wrenching game to Belgium.

The U.S. team, which had shown so much promise, was suddenly knocked out of the tournament on U.S. soil in the 4-1 loss.

U.S. defender Mark McKenzie has been leading the U.S. World Cup team in prayer after each game, win or lose. Last night was no different, even after the American players' dreams were dashed.

There have been Christian players on so many teams at the World Cup, pausing to honor God on the field, even in their moments of loss.

Brazil's Danilo Santos is one of them, well-known for being very vocal about his faith and openly giving glory to Jesus in both victory and defeat. Here he is, still honoring God after his country's loss to Norway.

I’d posited that the audience is largely the same.
I wouldn't.

I watch my teams on the channels where they appear. I do not select "sports coverage" based on the associated political alignment of news outlets with the same ownership. I doubt many sports fans do. I've watched Fox Broadcast Network sports (including last night for that soccer game), FS1, FS2 (two main, national Fox Sports cable channels), or BTN (FS affiliated cable network) if that's where they are playing. I'll watch NBC, ABC, or CBS; ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, or "the ocho"; or any of those extra cable channel they bring out at tourney time if that's where my teams are playing.

My favorite "general" sports blog shares the same opinion of the SEC that I do:

...as we go marching through Georgia.

What bias? How do you think American fans let lone Trump would respond if he choose to sit out?
Your opinions conflict with our good friend’s opinions.
Our good friend estimates that they, themselves, are “unbiased”.
Ipso facto, your arguments are biased.
