  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Meanwhile England and France are both through to the Quarter Finals against all the odds - high altitude host home stadiums, 12 minutes of overtime, dubious penalty decisions, biased Uzbek referees. England play Norway next and then maybe Argentina another strong favorite in this competition. If England make the final it will be after having beaten some of the best teams in the competition. I am hoping for a USA - Spain quarter final also. But I cannot see either team beating France

England proved their mettle in Azteca Stadium. I'm looking forward to the Norway match.

According to the referee on the field who saw the play in real time at real speed, it was not a red card foul. That card was only issued after a VAR and the play was reviewed under super slow motion. Also, the red card ban was later reviewed by FIFA under Article 27 of the FIFA Code of Discipline.
Too bad. Germany got kicked out of the tournament because of a VAR decision.

The “don’t mix politics and sports” crowd sure seem onboard with a politician directly involving himself with a ruling in a sporting event.

Rules, laws and regulations always seem to be mere suggestions for Trump.

I looked at all three of the links you provided, and please point it out if I missed it, but none of them support what you say. The only thing The Atlantic (the same Atlantic which was so horribly laughed at when they said that all the love shown for America was fake) cited was "a FIFA official" stating what the normal result of a red card is. Please get the name of this mysterious unnamed source and I'll straighten him out as to what the rules are.
Article 66.4 in the FIFA disciplinary code states "if a player or team official is sent off as a result of a direct or indirect red card [for a second yellow card], they will automatically be suspended from their team's subsequent match."

Rule 10.5 also specifies that further penalties can be added, but FIFA sources have said that there is no route to appeal a red card at the tournament.

Are you calling me a liar? I would say the same about any case in which a call was overturned following a conversation between a government official and the head of the sporting body. My feelings about the particular government official involved in this particular scenario are irrelevant.
My perception is not colored because I know he was wrongfully given the red card.
Two things can be true simultaneously. A penalty can be wrongfully assigned, and the review of said penalty can be instituted under suspicious circumstances. A wrongly-assigned penalty does not justify political interference to prompt a review.

I mean who knows, there maybe a mechanism that allows FIFA to rescind cards. What everyone is up in arms about is the rescind takes place, not the next day. Not the day after that. Not the next day after the second day, but the day where Trump makes a phone call.

There is - Article 27 of the disciplinary code allows the FIFA disciplinary committee to suspend the application of any previously-applied disciplinary sanction. Technically, the red card hasn't been cleared; the punishment has just been suspended for a year and will go away as long as he doesn't get another send-off in that period.

Thank you.
This is a tough situation for the player who has been nothing but noble about the red card.
US players like him play on club teams abroad and their fans make Philly Eagles fans look like saints.
This poor guy is going to be inundated with pure hell.

Is anyone forcing him to play now that the red card ban has been lifted?

The problem is there isn't a formal process in place, and a politician stepping in and getting what they want is not a good look, especially when the politician hearing 'no' carries implications and FIFA are historically horrifically unethical.

The card should have stood, or rescind all existing cards and implement a formal appeal process at the same time.

And it was all for naught.

That's football.

Belgium's defense was smothering and they never let up until the last whiste. The U.S. team had not faced a team of this caliber who seemed to be highly motivated.

Belgium played good defense, and the US played terrible defense. Pretty terrible offense too. Just an all-around dismal showing.

I'd post a link, but though it is clean, the rest of the site might serve something in the sidebars that violate the CF rules. You can find it if you want w/o problems.

From the onion dot com:

Report: That’s Enough Soccer For Now

WASHINGTON—Saying the nation had enjoyed a perfectly adequate amount of dribbling, passing, and loud chanting, a new report published Tuesday confirmed that was enough soccer for now. “Welp, that was fun, but we’ve got our fill,” the report read in part, adding that after a couple weeks of watching men from places like Italy, Bulgaria, or wherever kick the ball back and forth, Americans were ready to thank everyone involved and move on to something else.
