  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A red card is APPEALABLE after the game. Case closed. End of story.

US Soccer cannot appeal Folarin Balogun's World Cup red card suspension

The U.S. cannot appeal Folarin Balogun’s red card and ensuing suspension for the Americans’ round of 16 match against Belgium, U.S. soccer officials confirmed.

FIFA rules governing the 2026 World Cup, first cited by the Athletic, state that “a sending-off automatically incurs suspension from the subsequent match. The FIFA judicial bodies may impose additional match suspensions and other disciplinary measures.”

The only instance in which the U.S. could appeal is if FIFA’s disciplinary committee decides to suspend Balogun for more than one game after reviewing the incident.
..so no, not so much end of story.

By the team. Powers interfering from beyond the sport just taints the whole thing. Story alive, sadly.
I disagree, especially when that red card never ever should have been handed out for that foul.

By the team? No, by FIFA.
The problem is that Trump's involvement taints the process. I agree that the red card was BS, and FIFA was correct to review it. Maybe they would have even done so absent Trump calling the FIFA president. But the fact is that he did and, coupled with FIFA's well-earned reputation for corruption, that creates the appearance of impropriety.

What???

Teams etc appeal decisions. Not FIFA. FIFA appealing their own refereeing makes zero sense. Certainly outside politicians pushing along the process smells like corruption and favoritism.

But that bridge is crossed now. And the stink of it will remain.

Every World Cup red card received and waived since 1974:

Haven't followed soccer much. I still don't know what offsides means let lone what is an appropriate card for fouls.
But this kind speaks volumes.

I looked at all three of the links you provided, and please point it out if I missed it, but none of them support what you say. The only thing The Atlantic (the same Atlantic which was so horribly laughed at when they said that all the love shown for America was fake) cited was "a FIFA official" stating what the normal result of a red card is. Please get the name of this mysterious unnamed source and I'll straighten him out as to what the rules are.

Yes and so? The appearance of impropriety for anyone who didn't watch the game. Or who just hates America and Trump.

There is some sort of invisible blue line. At least with the "line of scrimmage" in football you have the ball literally sitting there on the ground and a couple seconds to ensure that you are onsides before the play begins. (In the same way that the set plays in soccer have regulations that give time to ensure proper position.)

You don't have to agree or disagree. The rules are in the rulebook and that is the way the game needs to be played.
You don't like it? Stay off the field.

As I said, the call was BS. I still think the decision to reverse it was tainted by Trump's interference, and not because I have anything against him. Going outside of normal procedures (and the head of state calling the head of the sporting organization to request an exception is absolutely "outside of normal procedures") colors the perception of any subsequent actions taken, even if they're objectively correct or reasonable.

It's 9.15 meters (10 yards). And I haven't seen it done in this World Cup so far, but there's no time limit on set plays. You can kick the ball immediately. Kind of like soccer's version of a trick play.

My perception is not colored because I know he was wrongfully given the red card.

I thought it had something to do with the relative position of the offensive and defensive players. Are you implying that that "offsides" rule only applies in limited area of the field (10 yard from the end line)?

Maybe it's just avoiding the offsides rule, but I was (on set plays) referring to how the defenders are closer to the goal and get chance (usually) to line up first to avoid a violation.

According to the referee on the field who saw the play in real time at real speed, it was not a red card foul. That card was only issued after a VAR and the play was reviewed under super slow motion. Also, the red card ban was later reviewed by FIFA under Article 27 of the FIFA Code of Discipline.

Yes and so? The appearance of impropriety for anyone who didn't watch the game. Or who just hates America and Trump.

It's the appearance of political interference in a global sports event. For years, FIFA has corrupted itself playing up to host countries. But this decision takes their corruption to a new level. Shame on them. As for Trump, well, we know this is how he operates. Whatever it takes to "win", he will do it. Red cards and regulations simply don't exist in his world. To win at all cost is paramont. There is nothing "hateful" about my observation. It is factual.

Sadly, our American squad has now been wronged twice - by the referee and now by their president who through his actions has cast doubt on any success they have from here. Perhaps the US coaches will elect to rest their star striker. That would be the best outcome for our U.S. team and the other teams competing in the final 16.
