  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Alabama attorney general defends public university (Auburn) baseball team prayers, Christian uniforms

I went to the Auburn University website to see the uniforms, but the only concerning thing I saw was something that looks like a Nike swoosh on the thighs. Am I missing something?

I believe that the official game-day uniforms are not at issue, but day-to-day “practice-uniforms” (that may have even been purchased with private monies? IDK) have been in contention.

Why did the Alabama AG deem it appropriate to weigh-in on this issue is more the point…FFRF had been corresponding with the counselor of the University, (who apparently referred the matter to the State’s highest legal authority).

Maybe instead of assuming the worst, how about looking closer at what we're talking about, which is the baseball team that people supposedly feel so strongly against. They seem to be doing well: Home Page - Baseball

And where is all the terrible religious symbolism on their uniforms? Unless someone points it out to me, I'm not seeing it.

Why? If a tree falls in the forest....

No authority has to decide anything unless/until the authority is involved. The law stands on its own; its enforcement does not. If one drives 95 miles an hour in a 30 mph zone, one is breaking the law whether one is caught or not.

Or do you really believe only those who are caught - with evidence sufficient to convict - can have broken the law? That seems totally boggled bonkers to me.
Courts exist for a good reason.

I agree that my belief could be mistaken, as too often is the case, but my belief doesn't affect the fact.
You can believe something is a fact when, in fact, it isn't.

Seeing words about something isn't the same as doing research. I don't just believe whatever some people say. Something about echo-chambers, tribalism and all that.

Google is free. I had that link available because I searched the first day to see if there were any actual students on record against it. (There wasn't that i could find, though that's also not unexpected if they don't want to risk being a target.)

No kidding.

And, likewise, you can believe something is not a fact when, in fact, it is. Belief does not change fact and, too often, sadly, vice versa.
I hope this goes to court and the prosecutor uses the same logic you're using. Religious freedom will reign and students will be able to proclaim their faith.

We don't know what these students' faiths are, if any. However, the practice uniforms are 'one religion fits all'.

"I disagree with..." is not really all that powerful, nor should it be. We cant cater to everyones various disagreements on every single thing. If you can make an excellent case, then you should get your way.

Religious liberty (not having the state impose religious participation on you) otoh is much more powerful and specifically protected in our constitution. Religious liberty positions are privileged by constitutional default - until we amend it.
Religious liberty is a constitutional right. Should I be able to refuse to play in games where blacks are playing? Muslims? We have adjudicated this in our courts.

Participation of trans athletes has also been adjudicated. There is not constutional right in this situation. However, a state can choose to bar trans althletes.

States can also choose to allow trans athletes. They can allow trans althletes to compete in a women's sport. Presumably, a state could allow men to compete in women's sports, essentially making all (or some) sports refrain from discrimination by not allowing everyone to compete.

None of those baseball players are being forced to put their faith in anything. They're not even forced to play baseball. Baseball is a extracurricular activity that they choose to either participate in or not.
So, perhaps it is OK for a school to have everyone recite the Nicene Creed before each game. After all, the player could choose not to play.
=======================
The issue is very different if a student chose to have a Christian insignia or message displayed on his practice uniform and the school required everyone to wear the same uniform and banned such insignias or messages.

A uniform is not a religion.
I have a T-Shirt that says, "University of Southern California". I never went there, but it's a comfortable shirt.
I have another one that says, "Menards". I don't work there. Don't bother me any.

This comes across to me as being deliberately obtuse and gaslighting.

You can wear a Trump or Harris tshirt even if you didn’t vote for them or plan to vote for them, but show up to a polling place on election day when they are both on the ballot and 99.9% of the time you will be asked to take it off or leave because of the perceived message it relays to others.

Show up to a Trump rally wearing a BLM tshirt and tell folks it was all you had clean in the laundry and see how well that goes over.

Crosses can be a fashion statement but for the most part if someone is wearing cross, a star of David or other religious symbol it is because they are representing their faith.

I have no issue with prayer before games or even the expression of faith on the uniform but, intended or not, it sends a message to the students of the school that they are not welcome if they don't have the same faith and, even if they don't voice it, it would discourage non Christians from participating.

The government didn't put those shirts in your wardrobe and require their use. Nor do they have religious significance. Your analogy is rotten.

I hope this goes to court and the prosecutor uses the same logic you're using.
Normal logic, that beliefs and facts are not the same and that neither implies the other? Yes, and I second your hope: prosecutors should use logic and law.

How do you envision the prosecutor bringing this to court? The university would be the defendant with, perhaps, FFRF as the plaintiff.
Religious freedom will reign and students will be able to proclaim their faith.
Students can currently proclaim their faith; they should not be required to proclaim faith that isn't their own. That is religious freedom
