  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The pardon essentially gives Vang a clean slate. “Being granted a pardon is a notable achievement and a reflection of the work you have done since your conviction,” Stark wrote in her letter to Vang. Vang was convicted in 2006 of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Between 2002 and 2006, he repeatedly sexually assaulted the girl.
At one point, he offered her $10 to keep quiet about the abuse, according to DHS. He pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal sexual conduct in a plea deal that spared him from going to prison.

A plea deal and a pardon. The next time he commits a crime Minnesota officials will act surprised. I just don't know what more to say on this subject.

Surely there's something else you could say on the concept of pardons? We could maybe think of some examples to prompt further discussion.

This article leaves out a critical piece of the backstory: Tou Lue Vang has already been living as a free man in the community for twenty years. The trial judge chose to stay his 12-year prison sentence entirely, placing him on probation instead of sending him to prison. Vang raised a family and worked locally for two decades without reoffending. The recent pardon was issued to wipe out the old state conviction and block an imminent federal deportation order that arose when immigration policies shifted . Even the victim herself petitioned for his pardon!

What corrupt thing going on are you alleging? Did someone take money or favors for the pardon? Or what corrupt thing are you alleging? Before you get defensive about me asking you anything, this is actually you alleging something.

Him being let off on a plea bargain was clear in the OP. He should have gotten 25 years minimum before being eligible for probation like others who commit such crimes.

So many hold the same attitude, they have misplaced compassion for the criminal and just don't seem to consider the victims. It's such an injustice when they get no prison time:

If it were more definable I wouldn't have called it something.

So you allege whatever, and don't expect to have to explain yourself? Perhaps, you're wrong.

I only get annoyed when I'm asked the same question over and over.

Just offer an explanation of your thoughts, then.

With the benefit of hindsight and the information available to us at this time, it seems to have been the correct decision.

Good point. Maybe we could look for examples where people have been pardoned and then gone on to commit further crimes. Maybe even the sexual assault of children perhaps. Do you know of any?

Of course perhaps I'm wrong.

Good, expect to be called on it.

I think something fishy is going on. Are you going to keep asking me the same question trying to squeeze an answer out of me that you think must exist but doesn't?

What question have I repeated this time?

One wonders how the victim and her family feels about it.

Stockholm syndrome perhaps.
Or maybe she forgave him. You know, like we are called to do as Christians. He seems to have repented and done well for himself and his community. He already served his sentence as well.
