  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Maher seems pretty objective-reality oriented. Hence his contempt for religion generally.

Is this really who a Christian would have us follow?
A person (who's technically on the other side), looking at their own tribe and "giving them the business" always makes for a politically advantageous moment.

I would say an inverse example would be be when the left-leaning pundits would bring up the quotes or statements from people like Liz Cheney or Adam Kinzinger regarding specific issues. It's not that they actually valued what Cheney or Kinzinger think about a variety of other issues or saw them as some sort of "example to be followed" generally speaking. It just makes for a flashy headline and "slam dunk" moment.

If someone is a devout Christian, and thinks it's awesome that Bill "sticks it to the libs" every once in a while, I'd recommend they watch more of his material.

I would say it has some striking resemblances to when conservatives and fundamentalist Christians would share clips/quotes from Christopher Hitchens bashing Islam (which he did go hard in the paint on that) while ignoring that he said almost equally unflattering things about their beliefs in other speeches.

Oh my, how soon you've forgotten. I went to ChatGPT to get a view which might be more balanced than mine. A decent American is one who:

  • Treats other people with basic respect and dignity, even when they disagree.
  • Tries to act honestly and take responsibility for their actions.
  • Respects the rule of law while recognizing that laws can be changed through democratic processes.
  • Participates in civic life in some way, such as voting, volunteering, serving on a jury, or helping their community.
  • Respects the constitutional rights of others, including people whose views differ from their own.
  • Is willing to consider evidence and revise their opinions when warranted.
Contributes to society through work, caregiving, military or public service, community involvement, or other constructive efforts.
Sounds like a decent human being to me.
The irony...

Right, but some of the names his listed off aren't even eligible to run for President. Mamdani can't run for president (he wasn't born in the US). AOC doesn't broad appeal (she's popular within a few progressive blue cities, and virtually nowhere else)

And it's highly unlikely that any of the "rising stars" will get the nod.

The establishment Dems have a lot of "2028 buzz" are:
Newsom
Buttigieg
Josh Shapiro
Andy Beshear
Raphael Warnock
JB Pritzker

All of which have done his show. (a few of them multiple times)

If any of the 6 people listed get the DNC's nod for 2028, that'll be who Bill Maher votes for. I'd bet big bucks on it.
What do Mamdani and AOC have that the others don't? They're very famous, and as soon as the others get some fame, they'll clam up too, because Dems only want a smiling face.
Not to mention, if you watched the full episode (as I did yesterday because I was curious), Maher wasn't terribly impressed with Vance's dodgy answer about denying the 2020 election results.
So? Only proves his _____. (Can't say it. I've gotten in trouble before.)
For those familiar with Maher's show, climate and election denial seem to be two major "red line" issues for him. And that's two areas where the GOP is sorely lacking at the moment.
Oh, and germ theory denialism, HIV denialism. Those are big with him.

Objective-reality oriented? Let's see...I mentioned germ theory denial and HIV denial. Did I mention animal rights pseudoscience?

No, I'm definitely not asking anyone to follow him.

Good Lord, you are so pedantic. I can’t believe I have to do this. Listen again. You’ll hear that what he says is two long run-on sentences, punctuated with “and” and “actually”. Here’s what he says:

“If this is where the Democratic party is going, where this Democratic Socialist – this obsession with Israel, with the Jew hating, with they don’t believe in Capitalism, no prisons, or, if this is where they’re going, my vote is in play, and actually always has been. I just every year I don’t make my decision by who has an R or a D, I actually always came to the conclusion that the Democrat was probably better, and voted for them, and Trump can’t run again and he’d be a little too exciting for me anyway, so it’s either gonna be you or Rubio.”

It's not pedantic to point out that the thread title is incorrect.

As for what he says, I don't see how that contradicts anything I said? He says his vote is in play--which is very different from him "flipping".

And, why’d you have to go to the Daily Beast for an interpretation of what you can clearly hear for yourself?

I was quoting the article you linked to in the opening post. They were the ones who referred to The Daily Beast. My quote from the article you posted was:

The host attached one condition before any such vote could happen. He pressed Vance to break from Trump’s pattern of disputing election results, framing it as a dealbreaker for winning over voters like him, according to The Daily Beast. Maher asked whether Vance would bring the country back toward conceding elections rather than alleging fraud after every loss.

Vance declined to give the answer Maher wanted. “OK, Bill, so this is where I’m probably gonna lose you here,” the vice president said, according to The Daily Beast. He argued that Trump’s complaints centered on 2020 and pointed to technology companies he accused of suppressing right-leaning content that year.

Everything above in italics was again, from the article you posted. If you thought the article you posted was describing things inaccurately, why did you post it without any specification of such?

Vance gave his answer, that the election was stolen by the technology companies, and if Maher refuses to believe that, then so what? We don’t need his vote. He’s still giving solid points.

It matters because it's further evidence he didn't "flip" like you claimed.

Lastly, why are you quibbling over this one word in the thread title? If he didn’t flip, he didn’t. So what?
The usage of "flipped" is a critical part of the thread title, so if he didn't, then its assertion is wrong and its "When Are You Going To?" becomes irrelevant. To claim such a critical part of it is just "one word" is to ignore that it's integral to the claim being made. It'd be like if I said "Trump Lied" in a thread title and pointed to an article that didn't say he lied, and when people pointed it out, I asked then why they were quibbling over one word in the thread title. It might be one word, but it's a pivotal one to what was being claimed.

For me just because Cheney or Kinzinger have some integrity and backbone, that doesn't mean I should follow wherever they lead on policy matters. So Cheney can see through this fraud of a president and stands her ground. That doesn't validate her whole political philosophy.

The OP person seems to think you ought to follow where people lead just because of.....?.... who they are or something. To be expected from a Ramones fan I guess. One of my music friends called them the Monkees of punk.

I would agree. I think there are large groups on both sides who would not measure up to this standard.

Have something to say? Oh I know, another idiotic excuse to attack MAGA. Go away.
Oh, come on. Let's look at your list again:
  • Treats other people with basic respect and dignity, even when they disagree.
  • Tries to act honestly and take responsibility for their actions.
  • Respects the rule of law while recognizing that laws can be changed through democratic processes.

It's a list of characteristics you have presented which you'd like, and probably expect, each decent American to posess. If I had presented that list myself then I wouldn't have needed to put in any [\irony] markers to flag what I was doing. Everyone, including yourself, would realise exactly what point I was making and to whom it referred.

If you have a muse then I'm astonished she wasn't screaming in your ear not to post it.

Not flipped just not in concrete.
Shouldn’t we all consider voting for people whose job it would then be to make us want to vote for them again…because of how much better they’ve made things, by doing their jobs?
I’m done with voting against a candidate, since, 1980.

I have never voted against a candidate that I recall. I vote for the person whose stated policies I can agree most with. Which does not mean even those I have voted for were in full agreement with me.

Okay, my English professor JSRG has given me an F. But before I concede that Maher hasn't flipped, will you tell me realistically what the Dems will do to change their ways. When he says “If this is where the Democratic party is going…”?
