  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

There's a little too much democracy going on for some Republicans.

Pennsylvania Rep. Scott Perry earlier this week supported a resolution that would repeal the 17th Amendment and strip American voters of their right to elect U.S. Senators.

The joint resolution, introduced by Texas Congressman Keith Self, aims to “restore the Founders’ original vision for the United States” and return the selection of senators to state legislatures.

“Our Founding Fathers designed the Senate to protect state sovereignty and act as a check on federal overreach. If senators are supposed to represent their states, then the states should choose them. Repealing the 17th Amendment will restore that constitutional balance and make the Senate more accountable to the people of Texas and every other state in the union,” Self said.

[What could be more accountable than having the people of Texas select them?]

Other cosponsors of the resolution include GOP Reps. Eric Burlison (R-Mo.), Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.), Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), Andy Harris (R-Md.), Clay Higgins (R-La.), Sheri Biggs (R-S.C.) and Michael Cloud (R-Texas).

Since they've done all the gerrymandering possible to disenfranchise voters, and learned they can't change their state that way, their only hope to stay in power while ignoring their constituents is preventing Senatorial votes completely.
Vote these two "men for themselves and their lobbyists" out!

I actually agree with this for the most part. Senators were originally tasked with representing the interests of the state in Congress while the House was for the representation of the people. Restoring that dynamic, I think would force voters to pay more attention to their state legislative elections to send people to the senate that would better represent the interests of the state in conjunction with the interests of the citizens of the state.

This would rely on the state legislature representing the interests of the state over political party. Current precedent suggests that this is unlikely in the current political environment. And, ultimately, who is better equipped to determine the best representative for the interests of a state than the citizens of said state?
