  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

On Tuesday (June 23), a Louisiana pastor was arrested after being accused of beating up a young man across the street from his church. Tony Spell of Life Tabernacle Church in Baton Rouge faces one count of second-degree battery.

According to reports, the altercation, which was caught on tape, was part of an ongoing feud between Spell and a family that lives in a home nearby the church. The couple who lives in the home said that they had been in a years-long legal battle with Spell that began after Spell refused to stop holding in-person services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2020, Spell was issued six misdemeanor summonses by the local police department for holding servicesin defiance of public health ordinances. He was also arrested for aggravated assault after being accused of attempting to hit a protester with the church’s bus.

Pastor Tony Spell of Life Tabernacle Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, says he was acting in fulfillment of Mark 16:18when he meted out a beatdown of a man who repeatedly threatened to rape and murder his family and harm his congregation.

Spell, 48, was arrested and charged with second-degree battery on Tuesday after he was recorded in a nearly one-minute video reacting to a 20-year-old neighbor who swung at him first at around 11 a.m. on Hooper Road near his church, local media reported. The video shows Spell raining down multiple blows to the man’s head and face, along with at least one kick.

In an address to his congregationshortly after he was released from the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a $25,000 bond, Spell made it clear that his actions needed no repentance as he declared victory before his approving parishioners.

The Central Police Department in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has refuted claims by Pastor Tony Spell of Life Tabernacle Church that they failed to investigate harassment from neighbors despite complaints, which forced him to beat up a man who repeatedly threatened to rape and murder his family and harm his congregation.

“Allegations that the Central Police Department has failed to investigate complaints lodged by Pastor or Mrs. Spell are untrue. Our records reflect only 5 incidents involving Pastor or Mrs. Spell in the past 4 years, and only one of those involved a complaint against their neighbors,” Roger L. Corcoran, chief of the Central Police Department, said in a statement Wednesday.
