  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

First off...the rich should not have to pay more tax's just because they are rich. I would go for a flat tax rate that everyone had to pay.

We need to quit acting like its a sin to have the drive and intellegnce to become a billionaire or trillionaire. Bill Maher while not a Billionaire is worth over a 100 million. He also pays when you add everything together over 50% of his income in taxes, that is not counting the charities he spends money on, he had know problem with it and is sick of people acting like he is a bad guys for being rich.

It is not that the rich do not want to pay tax's its that individuals frequently prefer to channel their capital through philanthropy rather than paying higher taxes because it allows them to maintain direct control over how and where their money is spent, rather than letting it get absorbed into broader government budgets.

People like Musk and Gates spend hundreds of million of dollars of healthcare and education.

So lets quit pretending its nothing more than Jealousy when it comes to the rich.

And If I was rich I would do the same thing the men like Gates and Musk do. I would spend my money on things I thought worthwile, because I do not trust the United States Governement know matter who is running it.

Not more but, their share. If we had a 10% flat tax rate ,we would be in great shape.

Do you have any evidence on the percentage of income they devote to philanthropy?
If philanthropy wasn't tax deductible, would they give as much?

I will use Bill Gates for my example because I have neither the time or desire to do a online search on what these people give.

Bill Gates has personally donated over $100 billion to charitable causes to date. This includes more than $63.9 billion directly transferred as personal gifts to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and about $10.8 billion transferred to his ex-wife's organization, Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation. [1, 2, 3]
The scale of his charitable giving is detailed as follows:
  • Foundation Giving: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (funded largely by Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates, and Warren Buffett) has dispensed over $110.9 billion in total charitable distributions since its inception. [1, 2]
  • Future Pledges: Gates has announced plans to accelerate his philanthropy, pledging to give away more than $200 billion over the next 20 years to distribute virtually all of his personal wealth. [1, 2]
  • Foundation Closure: As part of his commitment to empty his fortune, the Gates Foundation will close its doors permanently at the end of 2045.
And there many Millionaires and Billionaires who do much the same thing...I would advise you to do some basic reasearch.

The rich enjoy that which our great nation provides and they should be taxed at a higher rate than those that struggle to provide for their families.

In America, the rich already pay the vast majority of taxes. I am not suggesting that they pay less. However, the wealthy already pay a huge majority of federal income tax.

So because they were smart enough, and driven enough, to become rich, they should pay more than people who are not as smart of not as driven. Guess what I hate to break this to you. But the richest do pay the most.

The Top 1%: This group pays over 38% of all federal income taxes. They pay an average tax rate of roughly 26%.
The Top 10%: This group collectively contributes over 71% of all national income tax revenue.
The Bottom 50%: This group pays about 3% of all federal income taxes, with many individuals owing no income tax at all due to credits and deductions.

So Yarddog what you said is already happening. The reality is most people hate the rich but its not because there not paying there tax's. The rich are paying more tax's. It that you and most othere people are jealous of the rich. It's normal to be envious of others who have more than you. It is also a sin that you need to watch out for. And its alos important to remember that pretending your not Jealous is dangerous as well.

They should. I have problem paying a higher tax rate than those making far less than me.
